Nintendo and DeNA officially announced today that Super Mario Run, the first mobile game starring Nintendo’s Mario, will arrive on iPhone and iPad on December 15 in the United States time zones. The game will be available to download at the App Store at no cost, and players can try elements of the game’s three modes for free. After the initial download, a one-time payment of $9.99 will offer gamers unlimited access to the three modes in this release. So basically, the game costs $9.99.
The game was developed under original Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto’s direction.
Speaking on the news, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing Doug Bowser stated: “The wait is almost over for a Super Mario game that can be played on mobile devices. Developed under the direction of Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto, Super Mario Run brings a new take on the series’ beloved action-platforming gameplay to iPhone and iPad for the first time.”
The game is compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices that run on iOS 8.0 or later. The game will launch in 151 countries and regions on December 15. The game will support various languages, including English, Japanese, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Russian and traditional Chinese language options.
This marks a new era for Nintendo, as the company will now be looking to support mobile games and apps, which is a pretty exciting prospect. Super Mario Run was specifically developed for mobile devices. The gameplay features Mario running forward on his own, and players will have to tap a finger on the screen to get Mario to jump over obstacles, avoid various enemies, pull of some moves or collect coins in order to reach a flagpole to complete the levels.
