Summer Games Done Quick 2017 Begins Today
The summer incarnation of Games Done Quick is off and running! The world’s most skilled game players are breaking your favorite games as fast as possible in a week-long marathon, streamed live on Twitch! There are contests and prizes involved as well. As for the charity, every summer for the past few years has raised cash for Doctors Without Borders, and this year is no different. Watch great games be annihilated and make a tax-deductible donation.
The event began at 10 AM this morning with a one-handed playthrough of NieR: Automata (from a disabled yet skilled gamer who can only use his left hand). Later on in the day you’ll see lightning-fast playthroughs of Azure Striker Gunvolt 2, Metroid Prime and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
Some fairly long titles are in the lineup this year. Chrono Trigger has made its return, but it won’t be the final act (that honor will go to EarthBound, which also takes a while). But neither of them hold a candle to Final Fantasy VII, whose playthrough begins at 8:20 PM on July 7 and lasts until 4:28 the next morning. And here are the games you’ll be missing due to being somewhere else watching 4th of July fireworks: Half-Life 2, Silent Hill 2 and Resident Evil. Good thing GDQ keeps an archive.
Several new games will be making their GDQ debuts this year: Mirror’s Edge Catalyst on July 3, Dishonored 2 on July 4, Titanfall 2 and Dark Souls 3 on July 8. One wild card is Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which is not listed on the schedule because GDQ plans to run it at a time of their own choosing. Several speedrunners could have made the cut, but the man who completed the world’s first BotW speedrun, Orcastraw, will be running through it at SGDQ.
Summer Games Done Quick begins today, July 2, and runs through July 9.
