For a long time now I’ve heard strategy game fans sing the praises of the Suikoden series, specifically the first and second game. I could not confirm their boasts of Suikoden II being one of the best strategy games of all time because it’s ridiculously expensive and always has been. I’m talking the days before ALL retro video games gained unreasonable prices…Suikoden II cost a king’s ransom back when game collecting was a thing the average person could affordably do.
There WAS a reprieve for a while in the form of the Playstation 3 Classics version of Suikoden II, and though I believe it’s still obtainable if you plug your PS3 back in (though I’m not completely sure), no one is going to be looking there. And it didn’t seem like Konami really cared anymore. ….But we’re glad to be proven wrong!
Suikoden 1 and 2 are getting an HD makeover and will be reissued in one package on modern systems. The upgrades will include additional light and shadow effects, updated character portraits, and this should go without saying, but a more accurate English translation. Though Suikoden II may be famous for its gameplay, it is infamous for having one of the most embarrassing translation jobs of the PS1 era. Original translator Yasuo Daikai spoke to IGN in an interview where he explained what happened:
“Initially, for the original games, the size of the dialogue box was quite small and there wasn’t a lot that we could fit in there,” he says. “Japanese is a language that can say a lot in a very short amount of space, but for English and other languages, you need a lot of space to say the same thing usually. So in this game we have expanded the size of those dialogue boxes, and that has let us retool and work on the localization to get us more in tune with the Japanese script.”
Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars (full title) will be released for Playstation 4, Nintendo Switch, XBox One and PC in 2023.
