Solo Leveling Feature Film Announced Instead Of Season 3

Whelp. Those of you who feared that the delay over Solo Leveling‘s next season announcement meant a possible transition to features have just had those fears confirmed. This afternoon Crunchyroll revealed that the next arc of the manga will come in the form of a movie, not a season. A ticket, not a stream. And it’ll probably take longer to get here — all conditions of the recent trend of today’s successful anime hitting it big at the box office.

Maybe you should be flattered and grateful Solo Leveling is so much of a success that this is possible. But on the other hand…the waiting.

The movie will be called Solo Leveling: Beyond the System, and Crunchyroll will co-produce it alongside Aniplex, Netmarble, D&C MEDIA and Kakao Piccoma. It’ll be animated by A-1 Pictures (Sword Art Online, the first two seasons of SO). As for the plot, all the involved parties are shutting their lips for now. Exactly how much of the manhwa this movie is meant to adapt is a mystery, but we do know the story will kick off right where Season 2 left off, with no gaps.

The world of Solo Leveling is one that has been transformed by a portal to another dimension. The anomaly gave certain people superhuman powers, who are now referred to as “Hunters” because they make their living venturing through dungeons, slaying monsters that threaten humanity. You’ve seen a shonen or two before, so you can probably guess the protagonist of this story wishes he was a good Hunter but is incredibly weak, UNTIL he discovers a unique ability only he can possess. It’s the ability to “level up,” which means Sung Jinwoo can increase his power through fighting experience, just like in a video game.

Again, no date on when this film is happening but the existing seasons of Solo leveling are on Crunchyroll right now.

I was really hoping for a new season over a feature film. Solo Leveling has such a great story, and I feel like a series format would allow for more development. What are your thoughts on this change?

This is definitely a wild turn for Solo Leveling! I mean, I get the appeal of a feature film, they can pack a punch visually and maybe handle some of those epic battles better than a series can. But I was really looking forward to diving deep into character arcs in a Season 3.

I'm just hoping they don't rush the story in the movie format. Solo Leveling has such rich lore and character development that a single film might not do it justice. I wonder how they'll handle the pacing and if they'll tie it into the existing series well. Anyone else worried about how they'll adapt the material? What are you hoping to see in the film?

I actually expected this after they waited so long to say anything about Season 3. Anime movies make a lot of money now, so I'm not surprised they went this way. I just hope this doesn't mean we have to wait another year or two before the story continues. If the movie only covers one arc and then Season 3 comes later, I can live with that. The biggest problem is that not everyone can watch anime movies in theaters because some countries get them much later.

A-1 Pictures already did a great job with the first two seasons, so giving them a movie budget could make the fights look even better. My only concern is the pacing. I don't want them to rush an important part of the story just because it has to fit into two hours. I'd rather wait longer for something that feels complete than get a fast version that skips too much.
