We hoped we’d get a bigger look at Netflix’s The Witcher from SDCC, and it just happened! The streamer just now released the anticipated debut trailer for the fantasy series.
Geralt the titular Witcher, his daughter the Princess Ciri, and his love interest Yennefer of Vengerburg all have dramatic turns here, alongside ancillary characters no one is familiar with yet (though we know one of them is named “Mousesack.”). The show stars Henry Cavill as Geralt, Freya Allan (The War of the Worlds, Bluebird) as Ciri, Anya Chalotra (Wanderlust, The ABC Murders) as Yennefer, Jodhi May (Game of Thrones) as Queen Calanthe, Björn Hlynur Haraldsson (Fortitude) as Eist, Adam Levy (Knightfall) as Mousesack, and MyAnna Burig (Ripper Street) as Tissaia.
Those who haven’t played the games or read the books may interpret this show as yet another Game of Thrones wannabe, but that would be a mistake. The source material is good stuff. At any rate, the influence of GOT most definitely resulted in this show getting a high budget, so thank it for that.
The trailer ends right when Geralt is about to confront a giant spider emerging from a swamp, but thankfully cuts away before we have to endure that thing. Strangely Netflix did NOT take this opportunity to tell us when the show is coming out. We know it’s before the end of the year.
