RETRO ANIME THRILLER GAME KUMITANTEI OLD SCHOOL SLAUGHTER REVEALS CAST AND DEMO

RETRO ANIME THRILLER GAME ‘KUMITANTEI: OLD SCHOOL SLAUGHTER’ REVEALS CAST AND DEMO

If you love stories about murder mysteries set in schools, then you’ll want to keep an eye out for this upcoming anime thriller game! Mango Factory has released the demo and voice acting cast to their new game, Kumitantei: Old School Slaughter.

Kumitantei: Old School Slaughter is inspired by Danganronpa, a game series where a psychopathic bear isolates a group of characters and pushes them to kill one another. Characters are interesting and unique, hoping that your favorites won’t be the next victim or killer. It’s a classic anime thriller game with solid murder mystery elements that make the series very appealing.

It’s obvious why Mango Factory would want take inspiration from Danganronpa for their own game. However, they spice things up by putting their own twist on things. This comes from their addition of a card battler gameplay loop, where cards are gained by interacting with characters.

It’s a unique system that pushes you to connect with the other characters in the world. As a result, the characters grow on you because the of the gameplay, and making the deaths of your favorites hurt even more as a result. It’s a satisfying use of gameplay to bolster the story.

Mia Paige, known for her work in Fatal Fury: City of Wolves as Preecha, voices the protagonist, Himari Sanada. Alongside her is deuteragonist Moichiro Sanada voiced by Joshua Waters, primary antagonist and two-faced cat Nyanus voiced by Joshua Waters, and many others!

The concept is promising. Adding a card-based mechanic to a murder mystery is not a new idea, but the way they link it to character trust seems effective. If done well, it can balance the pacing of the story with a sense of progression. What interests me most is how they use the “Clinical Trial” phase. It’s important that the mini-games and card battles support the story and not distract from it. If Mango Factory can manage that, it’ll be a solid entry into the genre.

So they took Danganronpa and slapped Yu-Gi-Oh on it? I mean, I like anime-style games and even played my fair share of visual novels, but come on. Card battles? That’s what we’re doing now? I’ll try the demo, but I’m not holding my breath. At least the voice acting lineup looks decent. I’ve liked Mia Paige since her fighting game roles, so I’m curious how she handles a slower, more emotional lead.

I’ve been a fan of murder mystery visual novels since the first Phoenix Wright came out. Kumitantei looks like it captures the drama and tension that the genre needs. The art direction speaks to my generation — it really nails that VHS aesthetic. My only concern is the card gameplay: it might alienate people who come purely for the mystery. But I’ll give it a fair shot. Games like this need support if we want to see more serious narrative experiences in anime style.

I played the demo and I think it’s fun! The characters are cute and scary too. I like the cat villain. He talks like he is your friend but he’s not. It makes me nervous. The cards are cool, and I liked collecting them. I hope I can save everyone, but maybe it’s not possible. I’m excited for the full game!

From a design standpoint, it’s interesting how Mango Factory uses the Trust system to gate access to cards and information. It’s a good incentive loop. Plus, the 80s anime filter is more than just visual nostalgia — it creates a mood that fits with the themes. I would like to see more games take risks like this, instead of always chasing photorealism. My one wish is they optimize the UI a bit. Some menus in the demo were clunky.

I watched the trailer and then played the demo alone at night. I think the music and voices made it feel very real. It gave me chills. I liked Moichiro’s voice. He seems kind but also sad. I don’t talk much in real life, so I enjoy games where you can just listen and choose answers. This game lets me do that, and I feel more comfortable with it than action games. I will keep playing when the full version comes.

Okay, listen. I went in thinking this would be some Danganronpa knockoff with cringe writing, but it’s actually kind of fire. The cat villain is chaotic in the best way. Also? That art direction? It slaps. I’d buy merch just for that logo. I’m into the drama, the betrayals, the stress of not knowing who’s a killer. The card stuff is decent, not boring like I thought. Might even cosplay one of the girls if this blows up.
