Princess Diaries 3 is currently under development by Disney. The first film is based from Meg Cabot‘s 2000 her novel Princess Diaries. There are 10 main line Princess Diary Books but only two movies got made. The second one is not even based from the books. It has been 18 years since the last time a movie based from the long running book franchise god made.
The first book made $165.3 million and the sequel made $134.7 million. It made a then new comer Anne Hathaway a household name. This movie won’t win her an Oscar but it gave her the opportunity to star on movies that won her an Oscar. Fans of both the books and the movies have been hoping for a sequel for a long time, but there was never a Princess Diaries 3. Director Garry Marshall, who directed production on the first two films in the series, passed away in 2016, putting the continuation of the franchise on hold.
Princess Diaries 3 could continue where the 2nd film left off or adapt of the remaining nine books.
The movie and book series are about an introverted and socially awkward schoolgirl from San Francisco named Mia Thermopolis. She wasn’t well-liked at school, and her only friend was the most unpopular kid there. Her life did a full 180 when she found out that her grandmother is Queen Clarisse Renaldi (Julie Andrews). She is the Queen Regnant of the Kingdom of Genovia.
Anna Hathaway is now on her 40s and Julie Andrews is still alive and healthy. It will be great if both of them will reprise their roles. In an old interview, Anne Hathaway said she will be supportive of a third movie. Unfortunately, Being supportive does not equate to accepting the role. A recast will not make sense if its not a reboot. This third movie will be a continuation of the second film. I do hope a 40 year old Anne Hathaway will reprise playing Mia.
