Pop Mart Introduces New Hello Kitty “Mega Space Molly” Figures

This week, Sanrio makes a South Park joke become reality with the release of “Hello Kitty Island Adventure” on consoles and PC. Timed with this release comes an unrelated product from Pop Mart, their second collaboration with Sanrio as well as an artist from Hong Kong, Kenny Wong.

In 2006 Wong created Molly, a kawaii-looking girl with big eyes and a pouty mouth. The character soon became what’s known as an ‘art toy,” a design that gets made into lots of merchandise the way Hello Kitty was. Pop Mart has now merged Hello Kitty and Molly, and for good measure made them both astronauts.

Introducing the “HELLO KITTY MEGA SPACE MOLLY” line. Molly’s in outer space, and because she wants to be fashionable there, she’s wearing helmets that look like Hello Kitty and other Sanrio characters. There are six figures in the main line: Cinnamoroll, Pompompurin, Kuromi, My Memody, Pochacco, and HK herself. A seventh figure, Hangyodon, exists, but the odds of obtaining it in a blind box are one in eighteen.

These figures are larger than they look — each one measures 11 to 15 inches — and the price isn’t small either. Each box, which contains one random “Hello Kitty Mega Space Molly” figure, costs $269.90. Those who don’t want to gamble can get the entire set for $1,619.40. I don’t know how many of our readers want to spend that much on Hello Kitty, but the market must be out there.

The Hello Kitty Mega Space Molly line becomes available starting today on the Pop Mart website.

Kawaii! I love when companies merge iconic characters with fresh designs, but this price is steep even for art toys. I appreciate Pop Mart’s approach to collectible figures, and the 11 to 15-inch size is impressive, but $269.90 per blind box is a tough sell. I’d rather put that money toward a known purchase rather than gamble for a figure I don’t even want. That said, I can see hardcore collectors diving in. If they did a smaller, more affordable version, I’d consider it.

I like Hello Kitty and Sanrio, but this is way too expensive for me. I get that designer figures cost more, but the blind box system at that price feels excessive. If I’m paying nearly $300, I want to choose my character. The designs are cute, and I can see why collectors might go for them, but I’d rather spend that money on something else—maybe the new Hello Kitty Island Adventure instead.

This is exactly the kind of crossover I love! Kenny Wong’s Molly has a unique aesthetic, and combining it with Sanrio characters makes for an interesting design. People don’t realize how big the designer toy market is—these figures will definitely sell out. The price isn’t surprising, considering the size and brand collaboration. I’m definitely tempted to get at least one, but I wish they offered a non-blind box option at a lower price point.

It’s always interesting to see what companies come up with for Hello Kitty. The astronaut theme is cute, and the figures look well-designed, but I don’t see myself buying one. Blind boxes at this price point seem excessive, but clearly, there’s a market for it. I’d love to see them do a more affordable version for casual fans who just want a cool display piece without the high price.
