Peter Capaldi Reiterates Why He Left Doctor Who

Doctor Who will be airing its Christmas special in just a few days. It’s going to be a very special one, as it’ll mark the end of Peter Capaldi‘s run as the character. For those who don’t know, Capaldi has always wanted to be Doctor Who, and even came out of “retirement” in order to be him. Three seasons later, and now it’s time to depart. Which, naturally, has made a lot of fans sad. But for Capaldi, the timing was just right for him.

I want to leave while it’s still doing good stuff. I think the idea of another year–I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to deliver my best work. Because the schedule is very punishing.” he revealed to ComicBook Resources.

As for his favorite episodes, Capaldi admitted that he cherished every episode. But…he did have a few that stood out:

“There are some that are more special than others,” he allowed, “I really like “Listen,” I think “Listen” is the one where we saw something about the Doctor that I played that was very particular to him. Which was a kind of compulsive obsession about interesting things. And also, a deep love of humanity, which may not have appeared on the surface.”

Oh, and did he “take anything for the road”?

“No. I don’t feel the need to have any memento,” he said. “I got to be Doctor Who.”
