Open Opens This November

It’s too bad there doesn’t appear to be a trailer for Open, the half-musical comedy, half-thriller from Virgil Films coming to theaters and streaming next month. From the description we received today, it sounds like a wild one.

Open is about Kristina, a woman trapped in a crumbling marriage who finds escape in fantasies about the man she just met, a former TV star and teen heartthrob with a dead career. In her fantasies, she gains makeup and poofy hair and becomes the lead singer of an 80s new wave band. The director of Open calls it a cross between Marriage Story and Scott Pilgrim Vs The World, and we can certainly see that.

The film stars Lindsay Anne Williams as Kristina and Jeremy London as the former star. London, who does all his own singing, says “This film is like our own Rocky Horror in a way. It’s possibly my favorite role in 33 years in this business. I can’t even describe how fun and outrageous and brilliant these songs are.” Adds director Miles Doleac, “We left it all on the field with this one; I think audiences will sense that in the telling.”

Open will make its premiere at TCL Chinese 6 at Ovation Hollywood (formerly Hollywood & Highland) November 1st, followed by a limited theatrical release on Nov. 3 and a wide streaming release on Nov. 7. But before any of those things happen, the Open soundtrack album will be released on vinyl, featuring all the musical numbers in the film as well as a few scores from the soundtrack. It’ll be released in limited quantities October 13.

Their makeup in Open does give off a Middle Age version of Jem and the Holograms vibe, which is quite an interesting choice. It's always fascinating when films experiment with unique aesthetics like this, and I'm curious to see how it complements the storyline and the music.

Kristina's character seems to be dealing with relatable relationship issues, but the twist of her fantasies as a new wave band lead singer adds a unique dimension. I'm curious to see how this blend of comedy and thriller will pan out, but I'm not entirely sure if it'll be a hit or miss. The premiere and soundtrack release dates are noted, so I'll keep an eye out for early reviews to gauge whether it's worth watching.

Open sounds interesting. No trailer yet, but I'm curious about this half-musical, half-thriller concept. I'll keep an eye out for it when it streams on Nov. 7.

I love movies that push the boundaries and try something different. Kristina's journey from a crumbling marriage to an 80s new wave band singer in her fantasies, it's intriguing, to say the least. And Jeremy London being so enthusiastic about it, it's infectious.

Open is like that strange dish you order at a restaurant just because it sounds weird, but you secretly hope it's surprisingly delicious. Mixing a sinking marriage with '80s new wave band daydreams? It's the kind of movie concept that either becomes legendary or infamous. I'll grab some popcorn and check it out during its limited theatrical release
