Omniscient Reader | The Prophecy ~ I Know Everything. I Can Change the Ending.

-

“Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy” is a 2025 Korean film, categorized as Action, Adventure, Fantasy, and Science Fiction (Sci-Fi), streaming on Tubi TV (free with ads) and as a rental on Viki and Amazon Prime. It is adapted from the bestselling Korean web novel titled “Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint” by Sing Shong.

SUMMARY: The sole reader of a long-running web novel suddenly finds that the real world is manifesting the story. He’s the only one who knows the whole story. Armed with knowledge of every twist and tragedy, he must rewrite fate itself to save both the fictional characters he once admired and the real people now depending on him. Everybody’s in the story!

♦ Write a New Ending

In “Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy”, Kim Dok-Ja is a dull and unexceptional office worker whose entire life revolves around reading a single obscure web novel: “Three Ways to Survive the Apocalypse”. He is the story’s only dedicated reader, and he has followed its protagonist, Yoo Joong-Hyeok, through countless ups, downs, and tragic moments. On his last day at work, Kim Dok-Ja finishes the last chapter of the novel, only to be disappointed by its bleak ending. Moments later, to his surprise, he receives a cryptic message from the author telling him to “write a new ending,” if he’s not satisfied. Of course, that’s not possible. Or is it?

Yoo Sang-A is his colleague from work, and they’re riding the subway home, when their world, the whole world abruptly shifts. A dokkaebi appears and announces that humanity must now participate in deadly “scenarios” imposed by cosmic beings known as constellations. The first scenario demands that passengers kill a living organism to survive. Wait! Kim Dok-Ja recognizes the event from the web novel’s opening chapter. Immediately, passengers on the train start trying to kill each other. Instead, Kim Dok-Ja kills an ant from a young boy’s insect box, thereby saving himself and a handful of others, including Yoo Sang-A and the boy. But panic has erupted, and the subway train becomes the first battleground of the apocalypse.

As the survivors regroup, Kim Dok-Ja’s encyclopedic knowledge of the novel becomes their greatest asset. He already knows which characters will live or die, and which catastrophies lie ahead, i.e., the next scenario the dokkaebi will announce. When the train is attacked by a monster, they are rescued by Lee Hyeon-Seong. Huh? But he’s a character from the novel. In the original novel, he’s a soldier and one of Yoo Joong-Hyeok’s loyal companions.

WOW! I Met the Hero of the Web Novel and … ??? … He Doesn’t Like Me!

Before long, Kim Dok-Ja actually encounters Yoo Joong-Hyeok himself. He’s stoic, battle-hardened, and exactly the way the novel described him. Kim Dok-Ja proposes an alliance, hoping to change Yoo Joong-Hyeok’s tragic fate, since he already knew the ending. But Yoo Joong-Hyeok rejects him and literally throws Kim Dok-Ja off a bridge. Hey! Is that any way to treat a loyal fan?

This is a game … of life … kind of. That means Kim Dok-Ja can buy coins and advance. Kim Dok-Ja starts bargaining with the dokkaebi for coins and purchases weapons or other items he needs to fight, to kill beasts … whatever it takes to survive. If he has to diverge from the novel’s original timeline, so be it. What do you know? Looks like he’s in the process of rewriting the story’s ending. Oh well! Since he’s changing the storyline, might as well rescue Jung Hee-Won. She was a minor character who died early in the original novel. He thought that Jung Hee-Won should have lived. In “his” story, she’s going to live.

The group reunites at Geumho Station, where Kim Dok-Ja takes the lead and begins guiding them through the various scenarios. Each character has their own qualities and personality traits:

And they willingly follow Kim Dok-Ja’s lead.  Do they know he’s improvising?

But here’s the conflict. Yoo Joong-Hyeok is both a hero and a tragic figure, shaped by endless suffering. Kim Dok-Ja’s relationship with Yoo Joong-Hyeok is tense. He would have wanted to get along with the main character. Kim Dok-Ja never intended to replace the story’s protagonist. But in this real-world scenario created by the dokkaebi, Yoo Joong-Hyeok views Kim Dok-Ja as an unpredictable anomaly who knows too much. Their uneasy dynamic drives the novel toward an ending that neither the characters, nor the real people, nor Kim Dok-Ja ever anticipated.
