Was it Drugs or Were There Really Aliens?
Hong Ji-hyo (played by Jeon Yeo-been) started exploring the possibility of alien life forms when she was in middle school. She made a friend in middle school who simply went along with her for the ride. This friend was a bad influence. She smoked cigarettes, drank alcohol, sniffed glue, and persuaded Hong Ji-hyo to drink alcohol and sniff glue. It was a horrible experience. Hong Ji-hyo woke up in a hospital bed and her memories were distorted. Even though she was young, she understood enough to know that she had undergone brain surgery. She vaguely remembers having an unexplained and extraordinary encounter with aliens. However, did that actually happen, or was her mind messed up because she sniffed glue?
- {IMPORTANT HEALTH TIP: Sniffing glue can “cause confusion, slurred speech, mood swings, aggressive behaviour, hallucinations, vomiting, blackouts and breathing difficulties.” (Source) It can even lead to heart failure. (Source) }
Living Like Everybody Else
Hong Ji-hyo grows up and tries to forget much of what happened when she was in middle school. As a young adult, she has another close friend. Fortunately, this friend is not a bad influence. They both work at the same company and often socialize together after work.
As a young adult, Hong Ji-hyo also has a boyfriend who wants to marry her. Her parents think marriage is great because it would mean that she can live an ordinary life like everybody else and move beyond all that nonsense about aliens.
Does Everybody Else Have a Boyfriend Who Vanishes?
Shortly after her boyfriend proposes marriage, he disappears. Hong Ji-hyo searches for him but only finds his electronic wristwatch in the location where she truly believes he was abducted by aliens. Her parents think her boyfriend packed up and moved to another country because they broke up. Hong Ji-hyo refuses to accept that he moved anywhere of his own free will. She is convinced that he was abducted by aliens and sets out to prove it. In the process, she stumbles upon two different groups of people who might provide information and clues to help her find her missing boyfriend.
- Group #1: A wild and crazy group of YouTubers who report on UFOs and alien encounters; and
- Group #2: A church cult, a strange group of believers who are waiting for a Messiah.
The bad friend from middle school (who is all grown up now) is a part of the YouTube group. The church folks were told that Hong Ji-hyo is the Messiah they have been waiting for. Of course, Hong Ji-hyo is unwilling to accept that she is their savior, so they kidnap her and put her in a psychiatric hospital. Can you think of any logical reason why a church also owns and operates a psychiatric hospital?
The storyline for Glitch just keeps getting weirder and weirder and weirder.
Viewership and Rating
Glitch could be considered science fiction, but Netflix categorized the series as a Comedy. That’s probably the best category since there is no way a viewer would ever take the storyline seriously. It would not have been a believable sci-fi TV series. On the other hand, if it was supposed to be humorous, it wasn’t very funny. It was kind of disturbing, because in real life when people do get involved with cults and conspiracies, their ending is usually tragic. The people in that divine light church were dangerous and insane! This series had me wondering how many cults like that actually do exist.
Viewers rate Glitch 3.3 out of 5 stars. I agree.
