NYCC 2018: Ocean-Sized Five-Minute Aquaman Trailer
Out of the depths of the sea rises a massive trailer for Warner Bros’ Aquaman, by far the longest to be released during NYCC. Many, many massive CGI war scenes are shown off, but all the computers in the world can’t buy your movie personality. Good thing Arthur Curry and Mera have a ton of that.
The best parts of this beast aren’t the most expensive ones, they’re the simple moments between the future King of Atlantis and his future bride, a relationship the trailer successfully sells. Director James Wan said he was trying to break the “dark” Snyder-esque DC super-movie mold with this. Good for him.
One other thing I’ll give the Aquaman trailer is that I can’t guess the entire plot even though so much is shown. Some vague ideas are thrown around (Arthur doesn’t know he’s the King, he’s looking for a lost Trident, there’s a war in Atlantis, a guy with a bug head wants to zap them both into ashes) but nothing that can be fully pieced together.
Aquaman will be out December 21 in theaters everywhere.
From Warner Bros. Pictures and director James Wan comes an action-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, “Aquaman,” starring Jason Momoa in the title role. The film reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime—one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be… a king.
