The DC Universe has arguably the greatest cartoons ever made, and furthermore has some truly amazing quality feature films based on various stories and characters. One that will be released next year is the popular Gotham By Gaslight comic that features Batman in a Steampunk Victorian era where he faces off against Jack The Ripper.
The Elseworlds story has been popular with fans for some time, and so it’s not truly a surprise that it got made into a full-length animated film. At the panel for the film at New York Comic Comic, Director Bruce Timm though noted that the story would be much larger in scope compared to the original comic:
“Because it was such a short length, the identity of who Jack the Ripper was, there was really only one suspect, really,” Timm said, while the animated feature will include many suspects. “Some of them are red herrings, and maybe one of them actually is the Ripper.”
Timm also noted that the rating for the film has not been determined yet, and there will be scenes of a violent nature:
“It’s as bloody as it needs to be,” Timm said of the film. “It’s about this guy who is a serial killer. There’s more black ink than there is red ink in the making of the movie. It’s bloody, but it’s not like dissecting a frog. It’s not CSI. No, but there is at least one sequence that makes you squirm a little bit. Maybe two.”
There will also be many classic Batman characters appearing in Gotham By Gaslight, including Catwoman (who was noted to be like Irene Adler in this interpretation), Alfred, and even the three Robins, though not all are how you might expect them.
