It’s almost time for Max (the streamer, not the rich brat) to release a couple of cartoons with well-known stars that we’ve been waiting for a long time. Both will finally make their television debuts within a month.
First up is Tiny Toons Looniversity, a reboot of the beloved 1990s animated series, itself based on the classic Looney Tunes shorts. However Babs, Buster, Plucky and Hamton aren’t total ripoffs of Bugs, Daffy and Porky. The original show took the shorts as inspiration to make a new breed of WB cartoon wackiness that built on what came before it yet formed its own identity. Tiny Toons Looniversity, in turn, is more of an inspiration than a direct continuation of Tiny Toon Adventures. It’s a different bunch of toons; even if they look the same, they are not (Buster and Babs share DNA this time). Let’s hope it turns out as good.
Next up is Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake, which — if the trailer released yesterday is any indication — has a lot more to do with the original series than anyone realized. Up to now the assumption was that the whole show took place in another dimension or something, and while alternate realities still seem to be a part of it, Fionna and Cake wind up in the actual Land of Ooo and meet all the expected characters, including a grown Finn and Jake.
Adventure Time: Fionna and cake starts August 31 on Max, while Tiny Toons Looniversity will appear there September 8. The latter is being billed as a Cartoon Network series, but won’t premiere on the channel until the following day.
