N64 Games Are Coming to Wii U Virtual Console
Judging by an update on the official Nintendo Wii U virtual console it looks a lot like N64 games are coming to Wii U Virtual Console. A recent update now states the following;
Tip: Check back regularly for the latest releases, including the future addition of titles from the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo 64 systems.
This has been a subtle update by Nintendo and wasn’t anything announced during their digital events at E3, but it could be another service being offered in an attempt to strengthen the Wii U’s market share. We reported recently that the release of Mario Kart 8 had already made a large impact on sales of the flagging console.
Virtual Console releases have been sporadic at the best of times, but should some of the very best Nintendo 64 classics be ported to the virtual console on the Wii U – it could be a huge draw factor for fans who missed the originals and gamers looking for nostalgia.
Some of the greatest milestones for multiplayer gaming were released on the N64 – seminal classics like Goldeneye, Perfect Dark and Super Smash Bros. Alongside these multiplayer gems, Nintendo mainstays like Donkey Kong 64 and Super Mario 64 would also likely draw a number of gamers.
Without doubt though, The Legend of Zelda games – Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask ported to the virtual console would be a huge draw, particularly ahead of the beautiful open world Zelda game shown at E3 last week. With the HD port of Wind Waker already released for the Wii U, having three titles from one of Nintendo’s best loved franchises on the Wii U would carry a huge draw factor.
We’ll keep you updated as we come across more news surrounding this, but let’s hope this is coming soon. It makes sense given that a wealth of content is already there, just waiting to be ported over. Let us know in the comments if there are any other N64 games you’d like to see on the Wii U virtual console.
