Mister Scary Creeps Onto The NES

Publisher Dalyen Retro Games and developer Calgames present Mister Scary: Where Are You, a retro platformer for a retro system, now being crowdfunded on Kickstarter. The game is complete, and the funds are just to publish the thing physically (as well as bring Mister Scary into the real world…more on that in a bit).

Mister Scary is a short purple monster with a gigantic snout, who was created by the developer’s toddler. He’s on a mission to rescue his missing family, which is a journey that takes him through six Halloween-themed stages (note that the physical doesn’t ship until November, but the digital should get to your inbox sooner). Mister Scary has two attack moves, depending on the condition: he can jump and bop the heads of his enemies, or if he’s just eaten something spicy, he can spit a fireball out and burn them up from a distance.

Along the way, Mister Scary can look out for Scary Tokens — if he collects fifteen, he earns an extra life. When the going gets too hairy, Scary can duck — he’s invulnerable to damage in this state, but of course he cant move.

The cheapest tier is the Digital ROM Pack, which includes Mister Scary along with the developer’s previous games Jim & Dill 3 and Christmas Land. You can get the physical game, box and manual in the Scary Tier for $65. But there’s more to be had in the Super Scary Tier, which throws in a “World Of Mister Scary” printed map, an 11″x17″ vintage movie poster, and a sticker set, all for $100.

Oh yeah, and…..it’s also possible to get this authentic plastic replica of Mister Scary, bringing him into the real world — but there are a very limited number available.

The spicy-fireball mechanic is such a clever twist, and I like the idea of collecting Scary Tokens for extra lives — feels very old-school in the best way. Plus, November delivery for the physical version seems perfect for that post-Halloween vibe.

I like the design of Mister Scary. He looks silly, but not in a bad way. I think he will be fun to control. I don’t usually play retro games, but this one is interesting because of the Halloween theme. I hope the music and sound effects are spooky. I might get the ROM pack to try it. I’m not sure if I want a toy, but I understand why fans want that. The ducking feature is funny, like he just hides and waits for danger to pass. Good idea.

Okay, this looks like something I would've drawn in school, and I mean that in a good way. The fact that a toddler made Mister Scary makes it better. I like weird, silly characters that aren’t trying to be cool. The gameplay seems easy to understand, which is what NES games should be. Also, I’m a sucker for Halloween stuff. Six spooky levels sound perfect. I'm too broke for the $100 tier, but I might still back it just to support the developer. Making something like this for the NES in 2025 is impressive.

Honestly, this feels like a passion project more than a commercial product, and I respect that. The retro gaming community needs more things like this. It’s also smart that the game is already finished before asking for money. That’s rare in crowdfunding. I backed a project last year that never got finished. The idea of being invincible while ducking is a neat mechanic that adds tension—you have to choose when to stop moving. Also, I love when games come with posters and stickers. That stuff reminds me of my childhood. I went with the Super Scary tier. Worth it.

I don’t really play NES games anymore, but I watched the trailer and smiled the whole time. There’s something simple and sweet about Mister Scary. You can tell this game isn’t trying to be the biggest or best. It just wants to be fun. And I like that. The fireball after spicy food is a small touch that shows how much thought they put into something that looks so simple. I think more indie games should take creative risks like this. If the physical version had a soundtrack cassette, I’d be tempted.
