The trades previously reported that actor and Game of Thrones star Finn Jones was cast as Danny Rand aka Iron Fist for the next Marvel Netflix series. Now, Marvel Entertainment has confirmed the news, making everything official. Jones will star in the new Iron Fist show and the first live-action version of the Iron Fist/Danny Rand character. Marvel also dropped an interesting image on Instagram (available below), showing a note from the Joy Meachum character, asking, “Who is Danny Rand?”
In Iron Fist, Jones will portray Daniel Rand, who returns to his home of New York City after going missing for years. He decides to fight against the criminal element that’s corrupting the city using his incredible kung-fu mastery and ability to summon the power of Iron Fist.
Speaking on the announcement, executive producer and showrunner Scott Buck: “Danny Rand is a very complicated character. He’s a billionaire New York Buddhist monk martial arts superhero who’s still trying to figure out what exactly that all means. Finn is able to play all these levels in such an honest, revelatory way that as soon as I saw him I knew he was our Danny.”
Marvel TV head and executive producer Jeph Loeb added: “Finn wonderfully blends confidence with vulnerability, making him the perfect choice as he struggles to find his place in the world. Now that we’ve found our Danny Rand, we’ve completed our principal cast for the upcoming Defenders on Netflix and we are thrilled to continue to show audiences unexplored corners of the Marvel Universe.”
Marvel’s Iron Fist is produced by Marvel TV in association with ABC Studios. All 13 episodes of the first season will be available on Netflix later on. One would imagine that the show will launch in around 2017 based on the schedule of previous shows.
