Marvel Releases New Shang-Chi Trailer
This afternoon Marvel put out another trailer for their upcoming movie devoted to the mystical kung-fu section of the Marvel Universe: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. It confirms some theories some people have had about possible retcons to early MCU lore.
Originally, in the more grounded and less fantastical days when these movies numbered in the single digits, the Ten Rings were established as the name of a terrorist organization Iron Man had to fight. Their “leader,” Mandarin, was simply a decoy (and not Asian at all). This movie will reveal that there is actually a real Mandarin (whose name is really Wenwu) and the Ten Rings are actual items…though they’re still different than they were in the comics.
The classic Ten Rings were actual rings, here they’re more like bracelets. And in the comics each one had a separate power, and they made the Mandarin ridiculously powerful, kinda like Thanos…you see why this had to be changed; we’ve already seen it. The movie Ten Rings are significantly underpowered compared to the comics, and mainly serve the purpose of going “BWOOSH” at people and knocking them over with blue fire.
Wenwu is not only the big bad Shang-Chi has to defeat in this movie, but also his own father. Wenwu won’t be showing mercy just because Shang’s his offspring! Even with all his kung-fu mastery, he’ll still need help, and it’ll come from an unlikely source…a raspy-voiced comedian who named herself after a bottled water brand.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings stars Simu Li as Shang-Chi, Tony Leung as Wenwu, Awkwafina as Katy, Meng’er Zhang as Xialing, Michelle Yeoh as Jiang Nan, Fala Chen as Jiang Li and Florian Munteanu as Razor Fist. It will flip into theaters September 3.
