Lookism: Netflix’s first Korean Animation
Lookism was a hit Korean Webtoon/Manhwa that became a hit in 2014. Fans had fantasized about seeing this popular web-comic animated. Sadly it is not a manga, and mostly manhwas and webtoons get live-action adaptations. A webtoon got a Japanese Anime adaptation before, the Webtoon Tower of God. Netflix made the impossible because the Webtoon Lookism became Netflix’s first Korean Animation. Netflix is no stranger to adapting non-Japanese materials into Animation. They first did it with the Filipino graphic novel Trese. I am unsure if this will count as Anime despite the art style because this is a 100% Korean production. Let’s invent a new term for this new media. I am going to call it K-Nime.
Lookism First Trailer
Park Hyeong-Seok is the biggest loser and outcast at school. He is overweight, short, weak, and has a face only a mother can love. The center of Jokes is always him, and all that bullying made him wish for a change. One night he wakes and sees his lifeless body on the floor, but he is not a ghost. Looking in the mirror, he is fit, tall, and handsome. Park Hyeong-Seok’s soul got blessed with a new hot body. He decided to go with a new identity. He now goes by the name Daniel Park.
The moment Daniel went to school, he became popular with girls and had a social life he had never had before. His new body is also athletic, so he has the strength and stamina to play sports.
Then there is this twist: He is only fit and handsome during the day but returns to his original body at night. At day he is a trainee to become an idol and a social media influencer, but at night he returns to his old nerdy, unhandsome, and overweight self.
