The movie Logan, which was made to be Hugh Jackman’s last time as Wolverine, drew heavily from the Old Man Logan comics which told the tragic story of Logan in a war torn and villain run Marvel Universe. Naturally, they had to make their own story because of rights, but one thing did remain the same, the mutant race has been basically wiped out. This includes pretty much every X-Man.
In the movie, this was done by both humans who hunted them down, but also, by Professor Xavier, who accidentally killed many of the X-Men when he began to lose control of his powers. Ever since, Logan (and later on Kaliban) were to take care of him to ensure he didn’t hurt anyone else. But, in an interview IGN, Logan director James Mangold revealed that the opening of the Old Man Logan comic, where it was Wolverine who was tricked into killing the X-Men, was almost put into the film. Naturally, they were going to show the Professor killing them, but it’s still the fact that it almost opened the film that’s important. But why didn’t they put it in? Well, to help out the other films, and to not take focus away from Logan:
“The reason we didn’t do it wasn’t to spare other films, it was that it redefined the movie. It made the movie about the X-Men, instead of being about Logan and Charles. And irrevocably, when you read the script opening that way, it became about this other tragedy, as opposed to that tragedy being something hovering like a shadow in the background for these characters.”
That makes sense in a lot of ways, and indeed it would’ve been an image stuck in our minds through the film that this was the fate of the X-Men.
