We all dream of making it big, but we never consider what would happen once we do it. As such, we’re not prepared to handle the changes that occur, which lead to lost opportunities and mistakes. For example, the wild success of HUNTR/X has delayed the production of the Kpop Demon Hunters 2.
Scheduled to launch in 2029, Kpop Demon Hunters 2 is currently not in production because the cast and crew are too busy dealing with success to even think about it. Therefore, fans might have to wait a while before we hear anything about it.
However, that doesn’t mean they won’t have anything to share. Keep reading to learn what Sony and Netflix have in store for us.
HUNTR/X Success Delays Kpop Demon Hunters 2 Production
No one can deny the success of Kpop Demon Hunters, Netflix’s animated epic about a K-pop girl group that protects the world from demons. It has established itself as a cultural phenomenon, redefining how we see film and music.
Critics and fans alike praise the film for its heartwarming story, gorgeous animation, and action-packed moments. This praise led to numerous awards and nominations, such as the Best Animated Feature Golden Globe and a few Oscars.
That enormous success even extends to the film’s chart-topping soundtrack, earning it a few Grammy nominations as well. In particular, the song “Golden” rocketed to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, which bagged a few nominations for itself.
The song also brought fame and prestige to the characters Mira, Zoey, and Rumi, the trio who form HUNTR/X, the film’s protagonists. Because of it, their voice actresses, real-life music artists Audrey Nuna, Rei Ami, and EJAE, are now considering making the group a real one.
However, all that success comes at a price: new expectations, which are preventing Kpop Demon Hunters 2 from being made.
Kpop Demon Hunters 2 is Not in Production
The massive success of Kpop Demon Hunters led Sony and Netflix to greenlight its sequel. Announced in November 2025, the tentatively called Kpop Demon Hunters 2 has a 2029 release date, giving its cast and crew three years to create something.
However, filmmakers Maggie Kang, Chris Appelhans, and Michelle Wong are in no position to do anything. The trio revealed this news during an interview with People Magazine at one of the New York Film Critics Circle Awards after parties.
The women noted that they didn’t even have time to think about Kpop Demon Hunters 2 or anything else concerning the franchise’s future. While the story could go anywhere, they reiterated that fans must wait before any plans are revealed.
The film’s success contributed significantly to this situation. Kang described the movie’s rise to prominence as a whirlwind, noting how much they wanted to just lie on a couch, as the film’s protagonists do between sessions.
The filmmakers do love how much people resonate with the film. They also felt honored by their numerous award nominations and the praise they received from critics. However, all that fame and fortune left them with little time for anything else.
HUNTR/X Will Perform “Golden” Live at the Academy Awards
There’s no end in sight either, especially for the HUNTR/X actresses. Nuna, Ami, and EJAE already tour as the group, doing live performances for everything from “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” “Saturday Night Live,” and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Their next scheduled performance will be at the Oscars.
The 98th Academy Awards selected “Golden” from Kpop Demon Hunters and “I Lied To You” from Sinners as the only live on-stage musical performances for the event taking place on March 15, 2026.
HUNTR/X will reprise their roles to sing their song, while Miles Caton will be on stage to represent Sinners.
The move labels the two songs as the frontrunners in the Best Soundtrack Song category, for which “Golden” is the favorite to win. The song has already won a Critics’ Choice Award and a Golden Globe for the same category.
The other three nominated songswill not have live performances. That includes Diane Warren’s “Dear Me” from the documentary Diane Warren: Relentless, even though it is Warren’s 17th Oscar nomination.
“Golden” Gets a Kpop Demon Hunters Sequel
Fans must wait years before they get a Kpop Demon Hunters 2, but not for a sequel to “Golden”. That’s because Republic Records dropped “How It’s Done” as a single on January 24, 2026, to maintain HUNTR/X’s dominance on Billboard’s Radio Top 40 Chart.
The song took no time to reach the lofty heights of this sibling either, debuting at Number 40. Republic went all in to maintain that success, too. As a result, you can expect the song to be played regularly on most contemporary pop radio stations. The song already saw a 31% increase in airplay last week, with no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
We already know that KIIS Los Angeles, WBBM-FM Chicago, and WBLI Nassau-Suffolk, N.Y. play the song regularly and have been doing so since the single dropped. Other stations will likely play the song as well, especially if they are associated with the iHeartRadio group, which was an early adopter.
“How It’s Done” is HUNTR/X’s first song in the film, and it’s no stranger to chart-topping. It debuted at Number 8 on the Hot 100 as a part of the Demon Hunters soundtrack, which first dropped in September 2026. The song helped the soundtrack set a world record for the most chart-toppers from a single soundtrack in over 30 years.
The song joins “Golden,” which isn’t going away either. The song remains at the top of the Hot 100, Global 200, Pop Radio Airplay, and the all-format Radio Song charts.
The Kpop Demon Hunters soundtrack has remained steady on the Billboard 200 chart for the past 30 weeks and has led the Soundtracks chart for 28. It’s also still available from Republic and Visva Records. So, those numbers are expected to grow.
Final Thoughts
The meteoric rise of Kpop Demon Hunters should be studied, but we must also take note that its cast and crew are still human. As such, we should celebrate and enjoy their work with tempered expectations. We should let them rest before we demand more from them.
