Since being revealed as a member of the Suicide Squad in the upcoming movie, many have wondered about the role of Katana. In the comics, Katana has been both hero, anti-hero, and villain. But more recently it’s on the heroic side. Then as the trailers came out, it was clear that something wasn’t clicking. Now though, we may have our answers. Actress Karen Fukuhara talked to ComicBook.com and revealed that she does have two true loyalties in this film, saying, “She’s very loyal to Amanda Waller and Rick Flag. She works under them and keeps a rowdy bunch in line. She’s a protector and a fierce warrior.”
This makes it sound like Katana isn’t an inmate at Belle Reve, but rather someone like Rick Flagg who’s brought in to make sure the Squad doesn’t blow the mission. As for her legendary weapon, Fukuhara stated, “She has her husband’s soul in her sword and I got to talk to Maseo throughout the film and yes, of course that’s the in the film, but you’ll have to wait and see how much of the plays into the movie.”
Finally, Fukuhara notes that she actually received training to do all her stunts and sword work, which was a true joy for her: “I was really lucky because I blessed with a really great stunt double and stunt coordinator and they taught me all of the choreography during pre-production. I was able to do all of my own stunts except for one dive role, but all of my stunts. So, yeah, I got to run on top of a car, I did all of my sword work… It really made a difference when I knew everything from muscle memory and I didn’t have to think about it when the cameras were rolling.”
Suicide Squad arrives August 5th.
