Is Square Finally Rereleasing Star Ocean 2?

Someone at Square Enix‘s official support site goofed up this morning and uploaded a logo to the site they weren’t supposed to: something that says “Star Ocean: The Second Story R.” Immediately, millions of RPG fans everywhere rejoiced. Here’s why.

The original Star Ocean was originally developed by the Enix side of Square Enix as the most gigantic RPG the SNES had ever seen or would ever see; unfortunately it didn’t come out in Japan until 1996 and the cooling 16-bit market in the West meant there was no way to justify the price of translating it. But it got a sequel on the Playstation in 1998, and the rest of the world got that one a year later.

Star Ocean 2 (or Star Ocean: The Second Story, a title that was retained in America even though there was no First Story here) is a true joy. You controlled your characters directly on battle screens instead of using a menu, a rarity at the time. It had a robust item creation system that let you experiment and create hundreds of potions, armors and such. It had a wide cast of characters with the ability to “court” the ones you liked and build deeper relationships with them. And the soundtrack was GORGEOUS.

Most Star Ocean fans consider Star Ocean 2 to be the best entry in the series. Which is why it’s frustrating that Square released a port of Star Ocean 1 to modern consoles in 2019 (as Star Ocean: First Departure R), but stopped there. Evidently it didn’t sell enough. Well, of course it didn’t — the second one is what we’re waiting for!

What the press spotted today on Square’s website, though, could mean the company has finally woken up. Is a rerelease finally happening? We’ll keep you posted.

Not really into Star Ocean games, so this news doesn't really interest me. I guess it's cool for fans of the series, though.

Another day, another leak. It's becoming a common occurrence in the gaming industry. I hope Square Enix addresses this issue and provides some official information soon. They uploaded and removed the banner? That's got to mean something! I'm getting major goosebumps just thinking about the possibility of revisiting the epic adventure of Claude and Rena. Fingers crossed for an official announcement soon!
