Interpretation can mean everything in films. Whether an ending is one thing or another. Whether one character is good or bad, regardless of what they did. And of course, the hidden meanings that lie within the film that may or may not have been the intent of the writer and director, but fans still pick up on.
For Star Wars, the recent return to a galaxy far, far, away has had many affects on our culture. But with J.J. Abrams reveal that there would be gay characters in future movies, fans have wondered whether one of the original character, Luke Skywalker, could be gay himself. When asked about this, actor Mark Hamill stated to The Sun:
“I just read online that JJ is very much open to that. In the old days you would get fan mail. … But now fans are writing and ask all these questions, ‘I’m bullied in school… I’m afraid to come out’.”
Hamill continued, “They say to me, ‘Could Luke be gay?’ I’d say it is meant to be interpreted by the viewer. … If you think Luke is gay, of course he is. You should not be ashamed of it. Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves.”
While Hamill is clearly for it, it should be noted that many believe he is the father of Rey, the new star of the new trilogy. Also, in the now retconned Star Wars Expanded Universe, Luke had a wife and two kids. Whatever happens next is totally in the hands of the writers.
