IDW Announces Three New Star Trek Comics

Publisher IDW, who’s held the Star Trek license for some time now, plans to exercise it further with three new limited series titles. Coming in 2025 are Red Shirts, Strange New Worlds: Seeds Of Destruction, and Voyager: Homecoming.

Red Shirts is what it sounds like. You ever wonder about those extras that appear for a scene or two on a mission with Kirk and Spock and then get blasted or incinerated or crushed? What were their lives like prior to those incidents? Did they really deserve it? Follow their lives…but try not to get attached to them. The book will be written by Eisner-nominated writer Christopher Cantwell and illustrated by artist Megan Levens.

“We will get to know these ensigns and lieutenants intimately before they are likewise crushed, disrupter’d, and sucked into space,” promises Cantwell. “Who will survive? Will any? And what is the true nature of their planetside mission to hunt down mysterious spies? This is a major melody Original Series-era story in the key of Death, one I’ve wanted to tell for years, equal parts fun and harrowing, subversive and celebratory of the boldest tunic color one can wear in Starfleet, security red.”

Following the first issue of Red Shirts, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Seeds Of Salvation will begin its five-issue run. The all-new story will follow Chapel, Una, La’An, Spock and a new robot sidekick named D6 as they explore an ice-covered planet and uncover its dangerous secrets. Robbie Thompson, writer for season four of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, is scripting this one, and artist Travis Mercer is bringing it to life.

“I’ve been a fan of Travis Mercer’s storytelling from afar, and it’s been a blast working with him and the rest of the team,” says Thompson. “We’re taking the SNW crew to one of the scariest and coldest corners of the universe, and I can’t wait for TREK fans everywhere to see the cosmic horrors we’ve cooked up!”

Finally there’s Star Trek Voyager: Homecoming, a five-issue series that reveals what happened right after the final episode cut to black after its brief shot of Earth. “What if just moments after that, there was one last emergency for the determined Captain Janeway and her brave crew?” IDW asks. Is the Earth in trouble? Or is the emergency in deep space? Don’t get lost again, guys. This tale comes from the minds of Tilly and Susan Bridges and artist Angel Hernandez.

“We can’t wait to give Janeway and crew one last adventure… will everything go smoothly? Well, this is Voyager… who’s to say (we are, but we’re not gonna spoil it, where’s the fun in that?). We all spent seven years getting to know and love this crew, and it’s an absolute honor to be part of the team that brings them home.” Tilly and Susan say.

The first issue of Red Shirts will beam into comic shops this July. Strange New Worlds: Seeds Of Salvation will begin its run one month later in August, and Star Trek Voyager: Homecoming will follow in September.

Finally, some comics that dive into the overlooked corners of Star Trek lore! "Red Shirts" is a brilliant concept—those poor security officers deserve their stories told, even if they don’t survive long. I also love that "Seeds of Salvation" is focusing on the SNW crew, especially with Chapel and La’An getting more time in the spotlight. As for "Voyager: Homecoming," I’ve always wanted to know what happened right after they got back to Earth. Did Starfleet throw them a parade, or did they get grilled for the questionable decisions they made in the Delta Quadrant? IDW is doing justice to the franchise.

I love Star Trek, but these comics feel like cash grabs. "Red Shirts" sounds like a one-note joke stretched too thin, "Seeds of Salvation" is yet another ice planet story (how many frozen worlds does Trek need?), and "Voyager: Homecoming" could either be amazing or completely ruin the emotional weight of "Endgame." I’ll keep an open mind, but I’ve been burned before.

This takes me back to when I used to collect every Star Trek comic I could find. Seeing Voyager get a continuation is amazing—I never felt fully satisfied with how the show ended. And a Strange New Worlds horror comic? That could be incredible if done right. But "Red Shirts"â€Ļ I don’t know. It sounds fun, but it better have more depth than just, “Look, they died again

I am 100% here for "Red Shirts." The fact that Trek is finally leaning into the absurdity of their survival rate is hilarious. If they do it right, it could be the dark comedy goldmine Star Trek never knew it needed. I hope there’s at least one character who somehow survives every mission against all odds.

A Voyager sequel? That opens up so many possibilities! The post-Dominion War Federation could react in unexpected ways to their return. Did Starfleet accept Seven of Nine, or did they treat her like a Borg threat? Is Janeway hailed as a hero, or does Starfleet question her choices? If the writers explore those angles, this could be one of the most important Voyager stories ever.

I don’t usually read Star Trek comics, but "Seeds of Salvation" sounds like a fun adventure. I love Strange New Worlds and the idea of them encountering cosmic horror on an ice planet has my attention. I hope it captures the same character-driven storytelling that makes the show great.

YES! A Voyager continuation is exactly what I’ve been waiting for. They were stranded for years, and we only got a quick shot of Earth before the credits rolled. Did they even get a debriefing? Did the Maquis members face punishment? Was there backlash for Janeway’s decision to ally with the Borg? There’s so much to explore. This better not just be some random space battle!
