Hyperkin Developing Game Boy Color Attachment for iPhone
What started as an April Fools’ Day joke might actually become a reality. Hyperkin, the makers of the Retron 5, have revealed the Smart Boy accessory for iPhone 6 plus. However, it appears the concept design that was previewed on Hyperkin’s Facebook page started as nothing more than an April Fools’ joke, but it apparently it is becoming real.
Per the initial concept design reveal, the device is compatible with the iPhone 6 Plus (with possibly other smartphones to follow). The attachment will plug into the iPhone and turn it into a handhelf gaming device that is compatible with Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges. The design for the device includes an eight-way D-pad; two action buttons; a start and select button; and an included batter that can be charged through the phone and provide five hours of gameplay. In short, it makes your iPhone resemble the classic Game Boy. The actual gameplay will come through the iPhone screen.
A later post by Hyperkin claimed that the initial design was “leaked” as a market test. Per Hyperkin, “Looks like you awesome folks ACTUALLY WANT IT, so the Smart Boy is now in development!” Launch and release details have not yet been revealed. One imagines Nintendo might have an issue with this. However, Hyperkin did release the Retron 5, which was a console that supported SNES, Game Boy and NES games and had an HDMI output.
