- Memorable Quote: “You weren’t my third choice. You were my zeroth choice.”
SUMMARY: An immortal hotel owner is cursed to serve ghosts until she confronts the sins of her past. When a human manager enters her world, both embark on a journey of healing, love, and letting go.
♦ Only Ghosts Can See the Hotel
“Hotel Del Luna” is a mysterious hotel that caters exclusively to ghosts who have not crossed over the river to the afterlife.
- MEET the Hotel Owner: The hotel’s owner, Jang Man-Wol, is glamorous but eerie, with quite a temper. She has been the owner for over a thousand years. It’s punishment for a grave sin she committed in her past life. Even though she remembers little of the original crime, the weight of her guilt keeps her tethered to the hotel. The clock stopped for her and she doesn’t age. Jang Man-Wol is an immortal woman who is trapped. Will she ever be able to move on to the afterlife?
- MEET the Hotel Manager: Koo Chan-Sung is a Harvard-educated hotelier who returns to Korea after his father’s death. When he was young, his father accidentally walked into the Hotel del Luna. The staff immediately knew that he shouldn’t be there. He was a living human. But his father was between life and death. He crossed paths with Jang Man-Wol and made a deal with her. In exchange for saving his life, the father agreed that one day, his son, Koo Chan-Sung, would serve as the hotel’s human manager. Koo Chan-Sung tried to avoid honoring his father’s deal and accepted a job at the best hotel in Seoul. It was listed in Forbes magazine. But Jang Man-Wol told him he would either have to honor the agreement or … she’d kill him. He saw her use her powers and realized there was no way for him to avoid this bizarre fate.
WHY Does Hotel Del Luna Exist?
Koo Chan-Sung becomes the human manager of Hotel del Luna and is drawn into the world of vengeful ghosts with grudges and unfinished business. He meets the hotel’s ghostly staff ~ each bound to the hotel due to unresolved regrets. Characters like a centuries-old scholar, a noblewoman murdered by her family, and a gentle young man shot during the Korean War. One day, they’ll leave the human world. But healing is possible only when one confronts the truth of one’s past. Koo Chan-Sung meets and greets the various ghostly hotel guests, each with unique stories that mirror human fears—revenge, regret, longing, and love.
The heart of the story is about Jang Man-Wol and why she is bound to the hotel. She has a tragic history. Viewers learn of her life as a warrior and her doomed romance through flashbacks and through Koo Chan-Sung’s dreams. He doesn’t know why, but Jang Man-Wol appears during his sleep. He sees bits and pieces of her life, learns the story of the man she loved and longs for, and the source of her sadness. Her unresolved trauma and rage are the reasons she was cursed to run Hotel Del Luna.
Jang Man-Wol told Koo Chan-Sung that he was “her cup of tea”. At the time, he didn’t want to be her “drink”. But once he accepted the position as the human hotel manager, their relationship evolved from reluctant partnership to deep emotional connection. The daily interaction with Koo Chan-Sung slowly softens Jang Man-Wol’s hardened heart. Gradually, Jang Man-Wol remembers her past. But ultimately, Jang Man-Wol must choose between clinging to her past or finally letting go and freeing herself from centuries of torment. Koo Chan-Sung, torn between love and duty, chooses to selflessly support her journey toward peace.
