Ever since the fifth season of Stranger Things was first announced people have been spreading rumors about how long it is. Many made the claim that each episode would be feature-length, or at least 90 minutes long. These stories were based on the “evidence” that the season cost a ton ($60 million an episode is the final figure) and took an entire year to film, so how could it be short? Also, someone involved said the episodes would be “super-sized.” But someone else said the season would be shorter. Who was right?
Thanks to a post from Ross Duffer’s Instagram we now have a definitive answer to this. The length of the four episodes that are premiering this Thanksgiving is….a typical one, about an hour each. The exception is the fourth episode which managed to ALMOST crack 90 minutes.
- Chapter One: The Crawl, 1 hour and 8 minutes
- Chapter Two: The Vanishing Of…, 54 minutes
- Chapter Three: The Turnbow Trap, 1 hour and 6 minutes
- Chapter Four: Sorcerer, 1 hour and 23 minutes
Add ’em all up and it will take 271 minutes to binge this batch, or 4 1/2 hours. Plan your bathroom breaks accordingly.
Note that “The Vanishing Of…” is not the full title of the second episode. Apparently the name that would have gone there is a spoiler. It’s obviously based on the title of the very first episode, “The Vanishing Of Will Byers.” But who vanishes this time? We can only rule out two: Will, because the title can’t be exactly the same, and El, because the vanished one needs a last name for the cadence to work. Our best guess is Max Mayfield because it would create the greatest mystery. She can’t just get up and walk away…or can she?
“Sorcerer” is probably in reference to Vecna but don’t strain your brain trying to derive meaning from these titles. Until “The Hellfire Club” came out everyone assumed the episode had to do with the Marvel Comics characters of the same name. We won’t know what a Turnbow Trap is or where Camazotz is until we can see and hear for ourselves. The first half of Stranger Things 5 hits Netflix November 26.
