Helluva Boss Launches Helluva Card Game Kickstarter

If you’re familiar with Amazon Prime‘s Hazbin Hotel, and ONLY Hazbin Hotel, you’re only getting part of the story. Vivienne Medrano’s Hellaverse started with a series of shorts on YouTube, Helluva Boss, that take place in the same world but follow different characters. Soon the entire saga will be in one place as Amazon is set to get Helluva Boss added to the library next week, featuring a new version of the pilot. But before then…there’s the card game.

The creators of the show have been working on Immediate Murder Professionals: A Helluva Boss Official Game, which uses the same premise and setting. You and your friends play the members of IMP, hired as demon assassins to enter the mortal plane and take out targets that the souls of the damned pay for revenge against.”Your Asmodean Crystal lets you reach into the mortal realm, but the portal is fickle, twisted by spells, sabotage, and nasty imp-terruptions from your rivals,” reads the official description. “When five summon cards hit, the portal slams shut, and everyone is sucked back to hell. Only one killer comes out on top. Will it be you?”

Now here’s the most impish thing. This Kickstarter was meant to launch later today, but someone hit the trigger six hours early. Even though it had no problem meeting its initial goal in seconds with no warning, it also meant most were not ready to catch a super-limited tier that offered the retail version of the game for $1 and the Grimoire edition for $6. Rats. The rest of us will have to choose from the normal tiers: the retail version, for a $29 pledge or  the exclusive Grimoire version for $69. It’s worth noting the non-Kickstarter release of this game will sell for $40, so you’re still saving cash….just not, y’know, as much as SOME.

The Grimoire edition comes with acrylic standees for the characters, an additional character option, a slipcover case that looks like the grimoire from the TV series, and all stretch goals. Immediate Murder Professionals: A Helluva Boss Official Game is projected to deliver to backers next April.

This is cool and all, but Limited Run has a habit of taking forever to actually ship their games. I’m excited, don’t get me wrong, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we’re waiting until 2026 to actually get these in hand. Also, a hundred bucks for the collector’s edition? I get that it comes with goodies, but at that price, I’d expect a replica SNES cart or something more substantial. Still, I have to admit, it’s nice that a game this rare is becoming more accessible.

I’ve played Rendering Ranger before, and I can tell you right now—it’s worth it. If you’re into run-and-gun shooters like Contra or Turrican, you’re going to love it. The visuals were insane for the SNES, almost like something you’d see on the PlayStation. The soundtrack? Absolute fire. The rewind feature is nice for newer players, but if you’re going in, do yourself a favor and play without it first. This game was meant to be a challenge.

I love seeing these old-school games get new life, but I wish they had done more with this re-release. It’s basically just the original game with a rewind feature and a CRT filter. Would it have killed them to include a remastered version with updated visuals and music? Even something like an optional HD sprite mode would have been nice. I’ll probably still grab it, but it feels like a missed opportunity to modernize it a bit.
