The current season of the Tomb Raider cartoon on Netflix is its last, but Lara Croft’s small screen career hasn’t ended yet. She’ll be leaping to live-action next with a series on Amazon Prime, set to begin shooting soon. As of today, we know who’s playing who.
It was revealed months ago Sophie Turner is Lara (a choice that still remains controversial). But here’s some news that’s more welcome: Sigourney Weaver is in the show. I think, like most decent people, that Sigourney Weaver should be in as many movies and shows as possible while we can still have her in them. I almost don’t care who she’s playing as long as it’s someone (and it’s not a teenage blue alien, is it?) but here’s her character: Evelyn Wallis, “a mysterious, high-flying woman who is keen to exploit Lara’s talents.”
Bill Paterson plays Winston, Lara’s butler (uh-oh, I anticipate a date with the inside of a fridge for that guy). Martin Bobb-Semple is Zip, tech wizard and Lara’s Chloe O’Brian (he also appeared in Netflix’s TR cartoon). Jason Isaacs is Lara’s uncle Atlas DeMornay, who had a somewhat antagonistic role in the game Rise of the Tomb Raider as the guy who wanted to take her family mansion from her. It’s unknown if he’ll be as villainous here. And to save time, here’s a quick rundown of the rest:
Jack Bannon is Gerry
Gerry is Lara’s personal pilot and snack collector.
John Heffernan is David
David is an exhausted government official who finds himself tangled up in Lara’s unusual world.
Paterson Joseph is Thomas Warner
Thomas Warner is a senior government official brought in to clean up an almighty mess.
Sasha Luss is Sasha
Sasha is a fierce, deeply competitive new adversary of Lara’s.
Juliette Motamed is Georgia
Georgia is a devoted, by-the-books curator at the British Museum, dedicated to the ‘proper’ preservation of history.
Celia Imrie is Francine
Francine is the Head of Advancement at the British Museum, focused solely on raising funds and glasses of champagne.
August Wittgenstein is Lukas
Lukas is an illegal raider who shares history with Lara in more ways than one.
It’s a pretty expansive cast for a globetrotter who prefers to work alone. “Tomb Raider boasts a plethora of iconic characters,” says showrunner Phoebe Waller-Bridge. “I am thrilled to have been able to bring some personal and fan favourites to the screen while also introducing a few new rascals of our own to the mix. This cast is beyond my wildest dreams!”
Production on Amazon’s Tomb Raider show will begin soon. A release window is unknown at this time, but presumably they would like to time it to the release of one of the next Tomb Raider games, most likely Tomb Raider Catalyst in 2027.
