Yeah, I know... X-Play sucks or whatever. For myself, when they aren't talking about a Mega Man game, their reviews are usually spot on. And their annual awards have pretty much also been spot on with good picks. They even have some new and good categories.
Who do you say wins from the following nomiations?
I think the reason why The Orange Box isn't on there is because it's not a new game of 2007, but instead and a game of another year plus two other games.
My picks...
GOTY:
My personal: Mass Effect, no contest.
What will win: Super Mario Galaxy - Celebrate the Return of the King, Nintendo being back on top again and by all word it's a perfect game that any and everyone can play and enjoy.
Most Original Game:
Portal - That's all I hear about the game. All others are improvments on other gameplay.
Best Gameplay Innovation:
HALO 3 - If you've played Forge custom games, watched the movies and posted up picture of pwnage online the next day... you know this is the winner. The level of innovation that you get from the community blows aw ay the other games and will have legs for years to come
Best Multiplayer Game:
My pick: HALO 3 - Like I said above... it's a fuckin' party that you can get together with people around the world then show off later.
What will win: Rock Band - The next level of partying WITH actual people.
Best Action/Adventure:
Super Mario Galaxy - He never loses in this category.
Best Sports Game:
Fucked if I know.
Best Shooter:
Bioshock - It won't walke outta this year without an award. And the rest of the games are sequels.. been there done that, but improved.
Best Role Playing Game:
My pick: Mass Effect
What might win: The Witcher - By what accounts I've heard, it might actually deserve it more.
Best New Character:
Saren - This guy has beers with Bowser, Sephiroth, Dracula and Gannon. Right now they're buying him shots saying, "Welcome to gaming!" and all doing body shots off Benezia. ^__^
Best Art Direction:
What I want to win: Mass Effect. The whole world is both solid and beautiful. Echoes of other sci-fi classics, yet a feel all its own. A sci-fi universe that could exist beyond the game and florish like Babylon 5, Star Wars, or Star Trek. The Mass Effect Universe is one I hope to visit many times and hopefully through different media and genres.
What I think will win: BioShock - The moment I stepped in, I was in awe of its style. And that's a big thing reviews comment on ever since it first appeared.
Best Animation:
Ratchet & Clank - All reviewers say and agree, "My god, it looks like a PIXAR movie... O__O"
Best Writing/Story:
Mass Effect - BioWare always wins this and from what story I've played, it deserves it in spades. While others in this category may have been clever or powerful... Mass Effect is the one that stands above the rest.
Best Original Soundtrack:
What I want: Mass Effect - It's a soundtrack direction I never expected... early 80's sci-fi mixed a little bit with something I can't quite put my finger on. Battlestar Galactica does it, but yeah... it evokes memories of Bladerunner, Space Raiders and other classics. The approach was fully unexpected and very welcome.
What I think will win:
BioShock - 1940's and sounds genuine. Everyone comments about it, and it'll probably win. It definately added to the overall art direction and enviroment.
Best DLC:
Shivering Isles - From what I hear, that's a LOT of original content to add in a game.
Best Strategy Game:
Company of Heroes - Just from what I hear.. sounds like the king of the RTS hill this year.
