[Anime] Winter Season 2014

Giving a lot of these animes (despite how some of them may sound) the one episode treatment.
So far.........DO NOT WATCH "Saikin, Imouto no Yousu ga Chotto Okashiinda ga". It is BAD.
Thought it was gonna be a comedy for some reason. NOPE. Borderline-hentai. Gonna be Yosuga no Sora all over again.

Lol, as if the incestuous premise isn't turn-off enough.

Just finished watching the first episode of Buddy Complex and I really enjoyed it!

I thought it was gonna be Valvrave 2.0 because of how it used the high school theme but I wasn't expecting time travel to be involved too. The first episode was quite good and left a very positive first impression, enough to see where they go with this.

I definitely suggest that people give it a go.

LOL. Buddy Complex was definitely Sunrise-y, but thankfully it doesn't make me hate everyone and everything as much as Valvrave did. Hopefully from there though it does something more interesting--it's already got a more active protagonist.

Also, Noragami was more amusing than I expected. Too bad it's one cour, which pretty much confirms it to be airwave filler-tier unless it gets a season 2.

Got around to watching Buddy Complex Episode 2 just now.

This series seems to share a lot of similarities with Valvrave: The Liberator but it seems better constructed and thought out. But…wheres Valvrave attempted to do something different Buddy Complex comes off as kinda generic and a little boring but at least the main lead isn't a weenie/Haruto 2.0.

Eh, I'll stick with it and see where it goes. The whole time travel aspect could be interesting and I wanna see where they go with it. The mecha designs looks like the love child of Gundam 00 and Code Geass.

And I also watched Wizard Barristers: Benmashi Cecil…nooooot normally the type of anime I watched but I mentioned before how it seemed like Phoenix Wright and…it pretty much is Phoenix Wright with a magical girl flare.

….and that's essentially what his show is. The first episode was pretty good, and I wanna see how they handle the courtroom side of things a little more.

I've been making a start on some of these new shows. I think for now I'll be continuing with Nobunagun, Noragami, Hamatora, Hozuki no Reitetsu, World Conquest Zvezda Plot, and Wizard Barristers. I also watched the first episodes of Z/X Ignition and Nobunaga the Fool but I'm not continuing with those. Not that they did anything bad, but they just didn't grab me at all. Buddy Complex and Magical Warfare are on the fence at the moment. They did just enough that I'll give them another episode, but if I don't start liking them more then I won't continue with them.

So far my favourite by a long way is Hozuki no Reitetsu. It was only on my "maybe" list and I wasn't expecting to like it, but I loved it's first episode. I'd definitely recommend checking it out, even if you're not sure about the premise

I was not expecting a Giant Robot to appear in Wizard Barristers, the show suddenly gets all Pacific Rim half way through the 2nd episode:

It does get a little fan servicey but so far this seems like a pretty fun show.

I started this season with:

- Buddy Complex
- Hamatora
- Mahou Sensou
- Nobunaga the Fool
- Nobunagun
- Noragami
- Seitokai Yakuindomo*
- Space☆Dandy
- Witch Craft Works
- Wizard Barristers
- Z/X Ignition

So far I've kept all of them except Buddy Complex. It did literally nothing to stand out, the characters weren't receiving enough development to make them stand out from any OTHER Sunrise series, and at one point I was getting ready to watch anime and I looked at Buddy Complex and just sighed when I realize I "had" to watch it. The moment I felt that, I punt-kicked it off my list.

The other show that's potentially on the chopping block is Nobunagun. My friends seem to love it, but while it has its moments it just doesn't do anything to make me excited when I watch it. It's just a time-filler.

The rest are all decent, though nothing sticks out as awesome like Log Horizon or Gundam Build Fighters from the Fall Season, except maybe Nobunaga the Fool. Space☆Dandy is good but overall disappointing to me, Hamatora is surprisingly fun but nothing groundbreaking, and Mahou Sensou is a show that gets far more hatred than it deserves since it's actually decent. Same with Z/X: Ignition.

Yeah, I dropped Buddy Complex too. Valvrave may have been a trainwreck, but it at least tried to do something unique and new. The time travel aspect is interesting but the rest is so generic to the point where it becomes dull.

Thanks for reminding me that I need to get caught up on Wizards though…I'm like 3 episodes behind on that one.

I kinda like Nobunagun. Yeah, the "awkward new girl meeting all the 'colourful' locals" bit can get pretty so-so, but the bits where she channels Nobugana are exciting. It's enough for me to stick with it. Space Dandy is mostly my kind of humour, and on top of that it tends to drop into the kind of synthy background music that you'd expect from low budget 80's sci-fi (the zombies episode sounds exactly like John Carpenter's 'The Thing' at certain points), which I just love. I pretty much agree with your assessment of Hamatora though. It's a decent enough X-Men wannabe but nothing about it makes it a "must see" show.

I didn't continue with Mahou Sensou beyond the initial three episodes. It wasn't bad, but I got the feeling it would be like Strike The Blood - a potentially decent fantasy show that's drowning in a sea of harem, fanservice and "accidental pervert" comedy - and considering that I'm still hanging on in with StB in the hope that it will toss a life ring to the "decent fantasy show" part, I don't really want to be doing that twice per week

Aside from StB, I've also carried over Kill la Kill (not as good as Gurren Lagann, but still quite enjoyable once it got over the insanely fanservicey first half dozen episodes) and Samurai Flamenco (which seems like a massive waste of potential the longer it goes on TBH) from last season, and I've picked up Nobunagun, Space Dandy, Hamatora, Hozuki no Reitetsu (a wonderful combination of workplace comedy and Japanese mythology, albeit one that I often feel I'm not getting the most of because I'm not familiar with many of the legends they're referencing) and Wizard Barristers (an interesting show that is brought down only by the inclusion of a literal horny toad *facepalm*) this round.
