Tired of waiting around for Nintendo to release another Star Fox? So are we. That’s why it’s excellent news Giles Goddard, the programmer who worked for Nintendo on the original Star Fox, has founded his own development studio, Chuhai Labs…and you’ll be thrilled with what they’re making. Wild Blue — a spiritual sequel to Star Fox with everything but the official name! If we were flying jets right now, we’d all be doing barrel rolls. You are Bowie Stray, canine leader of the sky fighting team known as the Blue Bombers, on a mission to lock target and fire on the forces of the evil Baron. The setting is on Earth (or an anthropomorphic equivalent), not in space, but that doesn’t mean the environments won’t get exotic…oceans, deserts and cave stages are mentioned. This game will be totally on rails with no unnecessary side missions or ground levels — just like Papa Goddard used to make. “The easy-to-learn controls make Wild Blue accessible to both newcomers and genre veterans alike, while the stunning, hand-crafted anime-style visuals fully immerse you in its world,” says Chuhai. “Featuring a compelling gameplay loop, branching paths, and thrilling missions, every flight is an adventure! Experience all the classic on-rails shooter action with new and modernized controls. Discover a rich and colorful world with stunning vistas at every turn. Fly through an action-packed campaign alongside a stalwart squad of allies. Take on exciting boss battles and dogfights against a mysterious rival squad. Discover secret paths and missions on your quest to take down the evil Baron. Become an ace pilot and master every mission through a simple and challenging score system. There’s no release window for Wild Blue as of yet, but you can wishlist it on Steam and keep watch for further developments.

This is the kind of news I love to hear! So many classic genres have been abandoned in favor of open-world everything, but on-rails shooters have their own appeal. They’re fast, challenging, and full of replay value. If Wild Blue stays true to the spirit of Star Fox while refining the formula, this could be one of the best arcade-style shooters in years. I just hope it comes to consoles too.

Chuhai Labs is an exciting studio, and I love that they’re tackling this genre. The indie scene has been carrying classic gameplay styles forward when bigger companies ignore them. The hand-crafted anime visuals sound like a great fit, and I can already imagine how satisfying the dogfights will be. I hope they take some risks with the formula instead of just making a Star Fox clone. Either way, I’m intrigued.

This is cool and all, but honestly, I’d rather have a new official Star Fox game. Nintendo owns the franchise, so they should be the ones reviving it. I’ll admit, Wild Blue sounds promising, and I respect Giles Goddard, but I’d still rather see Nintendo bring back Fox and the gang in a proper new entry. Maybe this game’s success will push them to do it.
