Why Bruce Kalish hate?

If only life were that simple. But the fact is, opposite camps will always exist, constantly at war with each other. There will be those who'll crawl through a storm of hyper-vigilant criticism to lick the dust from Bruce's feet, and there will be those who want to hang him out to dry on the Lightspeed Megazord's ladder arms. It's those poor, unfortunate souls in the middle who suffer for it.

Eep. I'm beginning to feel like a certain sea witch now. Ahem...

I have been willing to give Bruce the benefit of the doubt coming into Power Rangers. I fully understood that more than likely, we were going to be in for some bumps this season with new blood onboard. I felt the same way prior to Ninja Storm and Doug and Ann weren't newbies by any means. Ninja Storm turned out to be a very enjoyable series, as did Dino Thunder. I loved both shows on their own merits. Each had qualities that appealed to my tastes.

What the criticism against Bruce seems to boil down to is his tendency to take what DekaRanger gives him and translate it verbatum to Power Rangers. That, and his apparant disregard for the continuity of the Ranger universe that Dino Thunder just spent an entire season reflecting on just for the fans. People are upset that Bruce wants S.P.D. to stand alone, untouched by the past incarnations, and for that reason, he didn't watch any of the episodes of Power Rangers to familiarize himself with the nuances of the franchise. Doug did that, and we applaud him for his efforts, while Bruce gets labeled a hackjob and a continuity rapist.

I find those extremes terribly unfair ... to an extent.

First of all, I find flaming someone, anyone, on a personal level to be wrong. It is childish and degrading. The quality of a handful of television shows does not have any bearing whatsoever on the personal life of Bruce Kalish. This is still a man trying to make a living, raise a family, and do the best he can.

Does anyone honestly think any rational person gets ready to write/produce a show thinking, "Oh boy, I'm really gonna screw the fans over with this one! What can I do to make them hate my guts this time?" Bruce is not out to get us. He doesn't have an agenda, and he's not using S.P.D. to antagonize us. He's trying to do his job, the same as Doug, Ann, and the rest of the crew. Like Doug, though, because he's put himself out there, he's exposed himself to the dark, ugly side of the fandom. I don't like it when people bring a man's personal life into their criticism, but like Doug, he's made himself the face of S.P.D. as a result. And that makes him a target, whether he likes it or not.

Secondly, I can hardly fault Bruce for wanting to blaze his own trail. That's totally cool with me if he truly believes it's in the best interest of the series. Power Rangers hasn't survived this long by doing exactly what every season in the past has done. Granted, there are concepts reused, but the seasons each work as diverse threads that come together to create this rich web that is the PR universe. Warrior Jedah once put this in excellent perspective. The flexiblity of the core concept is the show's greatest strength.

That being said, while I don't go to the extremes that many of these critics do, I can understand their concerns. I agree that S.P.D. feels directionless. I can no longer feel the personal connection to the Rangers that I was able to enjoy once again with Ninja Storm and DinoThunder. I won't say they're back to being cardboard stereotypes; I get just enough Bridge, Z and even Syd quirks to prevent that. The villains aren't taken seriously nor do I find them amusing. If they're not one or the other, that doesn't leave much to hold to. The stories blatantly contradict each other. The acting is very scattershot. Sometimes it clicks, others it sounds like a half-hearted cold reading of lines.

There are many things about the show that simply nag the hell out of me like a bad itch that just won't go away. I don't think Jack has any business being the leader of the team. Don't believe me? Watch "Back to the Past, Samurai Jack" (a.k.a. "Samurai"). You'll see exactly what I'm talking about. If Jack still believes it's the weapons that make a warrior this late in the game, then it's a wonder his team's made it this far. Heck, CRUGER himself bashed Jack as a leader in "Dog Gone Shame" part 1 (a.k.a. "Shadow"). If you don't even have the full support of your supreme commander, that should tell you something.

I don't like the regressions in character, seen most evidently in Sky. Granted, he was doing fine, progressing right along as he gradually loosened up, even started to see eye-to-eye with Jack...then we get "Wootox! I Got You All in Check!" (a.k.a. "Recognition"). Total regression. All of a sudden, he's back to being the cold, stand-offish prick who won't play fetch with R.I.C. When did this happen? No idea. It was there purely for the sake of finding out who Sky was at the end. I'll stop myself short of going all out on that dud of an eppie.

I don't care for the prop reuses. Bruce has acknowledged that their use is for budgetary reasons and for the sake of fanwanks. Ordinarily, I wouldn't have a problem with that kind of reasoning. But when you go into Power Rangers and don't do your research on the show...it's one thing to leave your own unique mark. It's quite another to play in someone else's sandbox while you're at it. Using their toys without any regard for their proper, established place in the sandcastle. Sky's dad wearing a Red TF uniform. Cruger in a crimson cloak wielding the Spiral Saber. Blue Senturion repackaged. I don't consider those fanwanks. I consider them violated. What then becomes of the sandcastle?

I don't like the nasty feeling I've been getting that we're halfway through the series and very little of significance has taken place. It took S.P.D. until "Dru the Right Thing" (a.k.a. "Idol") to give us a start-to-finish satisfactory piece. It took the show until "Dog Gone Shame" to give us Cruger's background and finally give the season any sense of purpose and direction. Yet oddly enough, take away Cruger's subplot and what's left? Not much to make me excited for what's to come.

But anyway, that's my ramble/rant. Long story short, I have nothing against Bruce Kalish on a personal level. However, I don't mince words when I say I'm deeply distressed about Power Rangers S.P.D.'s apparant direction. Or lack of one.

I find myself agreeing with all of your points and yet still enjoying the hell out of myself every week watching SPD. The "continuity rape" will never be a problem for me. Why? Because there are SO many holes I have to fill in on my own in the PR universe. Don't like that the man in the cloak with the Spiral Saber wasn't Andros? Then make it that Cruger was LYING. Write a fan fic about it, make up your own reason for why Cruger wanted to protect Andros. We know they have at least some relationship with KO-35. There's a zillion theories out there to explain the use of the Red TF suit. And the Blue Centurion was in a video game. That's cool...it's 20 years later. They'd idolize past rangers. Maybe it was a sixth ranger fighting game and they both just decided to pick the Blue Centurion.

And also, people tend to contentrate on the negatives, when there's times that show that Bruce and Co (because believe it or not, Bruce is not responsible for every descion made for SPD. :) ) have respect for continuity. We have a reference to KO-35. We've seen Aquitians TWICE, when they could've spent all of their time making up their own aliens. Remember to concentrate on the good as well as the bad, that's all I'm saying. SPD has it's faults, but it has its greatness as well, and while only three episodes have truly rocked my world "Beginnings, Shadow and Idol", the others have been enjoyable, which is enough for me.

great points but I take it you mustve hated NS and DT too since they were far worse in the "lack of direction" catagory.

Anywho. Here's what I find funny. Funaro kisses Doug's ass and says what a remarkable season DT was. But DT wasnt that great. In fact, a lot of people just kissed ass that season. I didnt hold back, at all with my opinion. I liked some episodes and some episodes I hated. Ultimately, I would say DT could have been improved and could have been alot better. It fell short in various places.

But here you have a great guy with a great mind like Funaro and hes just kissing and licking the ass of Doug with his praises (and it's obvious brown nosing with how he talks) and then he turns around and says Kalish sucks for using sentai clips. Hello. Thats the POINT OF THE SHOW! Thats how its produced for so fucking CHEAP. They use ANY opportunity they CAN to use SEntai clips! That's their fucking GOAL. Is to USE SENTAI CLIPs because it SAVES THEM MONEY!

I mean there is nothing wrong with SPD this year. Its following Sentai closer but wait. Where was the bitching during Lightspeed, TimeForce, and WildForce. Now, I wasnt in the community during LSR and TF. I came in at the start of WF and I dont remember any bitching that WF was following Gaoranger closely. Did people bitch this much about LSR and TF? Cause god dammit, those copied sentai like CRAZY.

And here SPD is going with Sentai story lines here and there and mixing it up with its own original story line and you have these extremists bitching over it. It's silly, I think.

I think Sentai is ruining the damned community. I honestly do. People need to put down the sugar and stop worrying about "omg can someone tell me whta happened in Sentai so I can have ammo to use when I bitch about how SPD copied it?! omg omgomgomgomogmomgomg! IM KEWL IM BITCHING!!! EVERYONE PAY ATTENTION TO ME!! HUR HAR HUR!".

Ok, this is Power Rangers. Super Sentai is a differant show. People need to stop caring about "what happened in sentai". They need to care about "did I like this episode of Power Rangers?". Its the story and the episode that matters. Not wether or not that story came from Super Sentai. Honestly, who cares? If you liked it why the **** do you care. Too many people care and it's really ruining the community.

Super Sentai and Power Rangers should be treated as differant and seperate shows. And should be commented on as such. Not compared to each other with finger pointing.

And blah blah blah. Meow meow meow.

My opinion: I dont think SPD is as great as TimeForce OR WildForce yet. Not yet but it's damn close to being as great as them. But TF and WF had so many great moments that gave me tingles, got me teary eyed, had good acting or a great storyline. SPD has alot of these elements. But we will have to wait and see if it will deliver in the coming 18 episodes.

Grn...it's called an opinion. :) You THINK NS and DT were lacking in direction. I, personally, don't. I don't think SPD is either.

Like I said earlier, I enjoyed both Ninja Storm and DinoThunder. I'm not blind to the fact that both shows had flaws; what television show doesn't? But I really enjoyed what Doug, Ann, and the rest set out to do with those two.

Yes, people did bitch about Lightspeed Rescue and Time Force following their sentai. Again, like I said, there always have been people who will get riled up about that, along with the other side that will jump in front of Judd, Doug, or Bruce to take the bullets of criticism.

Most of those people enjoyed seasons like Space and Lost Galaxy. Seasons in which we saw a boatload of American footage and very little in the way of adherence to Megaranger and Gingaman, save for the Psycho Ranger saga and Magna Defender saga. They liked these seasons because for the most part, they felt original. Different enough from their sentai counterparts for them to momentarily forget the sentai, sit back, and enjoy Power Rangers. When seasons copy the sentai verbatum, those who have seen the original material are constantly reminded of it, and take offense because bottom line:

Power Rangers is not and never will be sentai.

If "Lost and Found in Translation" didn't awesomely drive that point home, I don't know what will. But anyway, I suspect that many people want to ignore the sentai and just enjoy Power Rangers. They don't appreciate it when the show tries to be sentai, only re-dubbed, because like I said, Power Rangers is not sentai. They'd like nothing more than for Bruce to follow through with his intention to blaze his own trail with the show, with his own vision and ideas.

But we're halfway done with S.P.D. and the problem is - we still don't have a clue what Bruce's vision is! Where is this show going? What do we have to look forward to? I'm just getting too much of a sense that the show is stuck in a cycle of contradiction and regression while Bruce leans on Deka to pull him through. That's mostly what disheartens me about the whole issue.

Like's been said, the hate comes because there will always be people who don't like something and the louder they can proclaim it the more they feel like they've "won" something against someone.

SPD has it's shortcomings and faults, but I'm enjoying it a helluva lot more than NS and DT. I missed entire sections of those shows cuz I just didn't care. Too much unneeded and ill timed goofyness.

The shows annoyed me.

SPD, I haven't seen anything done that couldn't be explained somehow. Anubis's cloak... maybe he trained in the same fighting Academy as Andros on KO-35 and that's what they give their graduates.

And so forth...

Bleh... I need some more sleep.. :170:

People hate Doug Sloan.
People hate Bruce Bruce.

Who the **** cares. As long as you like what you like is all that matters in my book.

**** the rest.

How the HELL is sentai ruining PR's continuity??? Give me a break. It's more like the other way around. :redface2:

No kidding.

You shouldn't have even replied to such a stupid comment.

I wouldn't go as far as to call his comment stupid. You're always allowed to voice your opinion, just be prepared to back it up.
