(Where Wraithstrike Watches) The Toku Thread

I do like the entire team, save Gai. I'm sorry, but he just comes off as a colossal tool in these episodes; he cheats at cards so he can make some big showy display to the woman he's playing against, makes his big speech in favor of humanity dying out to cover for how freaked out he was about his sudden super strength, lewdly looks at a police woman and makes her very uncomfortable, and then points and laughs at Ryu while he's being choked to death after saving some kids. I just can't find anything likeable to the guy in these episodes.

Jetman Episode 5: Fall For Me!

Yeah, Gai's still being transparent here. I'm pretty sure the train track incident in the episode was an act put on by Gai. But he's willing to protect her even after she rejects him. Maybe he's softening up.

Meanwhile, all of Vyram attacks Jetman. To recap, three of these people have never fought before in their lives, and Vyram consider them a big enough threat to handle personally?

This episode, Gai manages to come off less skeevy and more completely ridiculous; I mean seriously dude, do you think that while you're being pursued by a homicidal killer robot is really the right time to try and flirt?

And I should emphasize that aside from Gai, I really do like everyone else, and these past two episodes have been really good for Kaori. And yeah, the Vyram come off as this huge, domineering presence at first, but their pettiness and the fact that it really is just these four guys diminishes that a just little bit.

Jetman Episode 6: Get Angry, Robo!

Here's my theory on what's going on here. Gai has spent his whole life looking out for number one. His whole worldview is an objectivist one, where a man only works for that man's interest.
Ryu, however, represents something he's never seen before: Altruism. Ryu will risk his own life to ensure that even people who hate him are saved. Gai doesn't understand it, and the fact that he doesn't understand it makes it all the more mysterious to him.

Gai has watched as this altruism has rubbed off on the others. For a chance to help others, Kaori gave up a profitable arranged marriage, Raita left his farm, and Ako gave back a check that could have kept her financially secure for a long time. And to Gai, with everyone working to help people without getting anything out of it, he feels like the odd man out. He's in danger of losing his selfish attitude, and that scares him.

That's the deep theory there. And now for the shallow theory, completed supported by canon.
The Vyram all hate one another and are only together for expediency's sake.

That is an interesting take on Gai; I have one of my own, but that one's largely based on a later episode, so I'll go into it when you get there.

And yeah, if the Vyram members each had their own monster making supplies instead of having to draw off the same communal source, they would split in a second.

Jetman Episode 7: Ryu's Marriage

This episode is only meh. It's not particularly great, nor particularly bad. The high point of the episode was when Gai got busted by Ako for wanting Ryu out of the way.

Yeah, there really isn't much of anything to say about this episode at all; just total filler that doesn't stand out in any way.

That's because Gai ISN'T likable in those episodes. Or even the first like 30 eps in general.

The main reason why I admire the character Gai so much is because of his season long character development. I really love how the character is written and executed (credit goes to both the writers and the actor). I think Gai is a very interesting and believable character. He transforms from a jerk to a much better person. And that's why I like Gai. He's a character who can think. And after like 30 eps of experience, he finally starts changing into a better person.

I think Gai did the whole "badass" type character pretty well. Unlike say Ren from Ryuki, Takumi from Faiz, Tendou from Kabuto, and Akashi from Boukenger, all who try to be a badass type character, but just come off as just cardboard jerks imo.

It's perfectly understandable why you don't like watching Gai. What he does isn't nice at all and can be hard to watch for someone like you.
