Where Do I Go From Here?

Hello! I'm new to this site and toku in general. I grew up with PR blah blah. I just finished all the Kamen Rider Kabuto episodes and I really liked them. I've started on Blade, and I may like that even more than Kabuto . But seriously, what should I watch from there? I was thinking of checking out 555, but I would like everyone's opinion. Thanks in advance!

555 is fantastic, yeah. It's much darker than Kabuto and quite depressing at times, but it's incredibly addictive, compelling viewing. I very much recommend it.

Garo is amazing, too. Toku for older teens and adults, there's lots of horror, blood and gore with incredible action sequences, interesting mythology and characters that really grow on you.

I would stay away from 555 because, well, it kinda sucks. The first 12 episodes or so are great, but it really goes downhill once Kusaka pops in. I would recommend Kamen Rider Agito, it's one of the most complete tokusatsu shows out there. It's got an amazing story that ties in so well to all of the characters, not to mention it's also got a fairly decent cast. It may not be as "dark" as some shows, but I find those to be overrated.

I don't know why people have such a love affair with Garo though. It's a decent show, but not much else. The action sequences weren't even that good, yeah the suits were amazing, but it doesn't matter when it stifles any real action and we're left with some pretty bad CG...which I guess isn't too bad by Japanese standards, but I guess I'm just too used to Western stuff to have found it all that interesting. That's just the aesthetic side, the characters were pretty dull, aside from the Kouga and Kaori relationship at first, but that goes to heck pretty fast. Everyone else seemed pretty predictable and stale.

I think for someone who's getting into toku for the first time, 555 is a good way to go. Personally. You really do get hooked on it, the fighting is actually amazing and smooth, and acting aside, you really do start to feel for the characters. Agito's great all around. I dunno if the order you watch the shows in really matters, but do look around, grab a couple clips on YouTube and see what you want to watch first. All the Heisei shows are pretty fun.

Despite GARO being seemingly overrated, it is a really good show. So definitely see that, it's short to.

Umm...try Sentai too?

For that, I was thinking Aba Ranger or Boukenger. How are they?
I didn't like AbaRanger until the very end. Boukenger was good, it was a pretty up-and-down show for a lot of people, it seems.

I started with the more recent Sentai shows and kinda worked my way back, guess you could do the same? I loved DekaRanger and MagiRanger. Don't think you can go wrong with those. I haven't found too many older shows that appeal to me a whole lot, but I'm still working on that. XD I always YouTube each show a bit before watching it to see what it's like, perhaps you could do that and see what appeals to you, because others who recommend shows to you might not share your taste in shows.

Non-Toei stuff is good too. Rescue Force is currently airing, it'd be easy to catch up on, I'd think.

Shows a new viewer should definitely watch:

- 80s and 90s Sentais (including Timeranger), and Gekiranger

- KRs Kuuga, Agito and Ryuki

- Choujinki Metalder

- Ultraman Nexus

- Sei Shin Series (particularly Gransazer)

- Garo (if only for aesthetic purposes and to see how "adult" tokus can be possible)

Avoid KRs Hibiki, Kabuto and Den-O until you have seen some of the previous shows first. And avoid most modern Sentais at all costs.

I dunno, I got into KR via Den-O, as have bunch of other people I've shown it to...

But yeah, There's also Ultraman Mebius that's being subbed right now, and it's great.
