The "V" may also be a reference to the "V" in Aka Ranger's chest. That may be the main reason and one of the puns Toei intended for "V's" significance to Super Sentai. The next is of course, to symbolize a sentai as having at least 5 members. Maybe Toei also paid some homage to Combattler V and Voltes V as both super robot anime shows featured 5 members piloting a giant robo.
