Very important thing to find out if you're living in a college dorm.
THE SIZE OF THE MATTRESS.
Because most colleges use extra long twin size mattresses which standar twin size sheets will NOT fit. Thankfully most stores like Walmart, Target, Bed Bath & Beyond now sell extra long twin size sheet sets for roughly the price of normal twin size sheet sets. Oh and a vinyl cover for the mattress... you really don't know who did what on that mattress the semester before you.
Then cover the vinyl cover with another mattress cover made of cloth... off hand I can't recall the correct name for that but it's like a pad... oh duh, mattress pad. Then your sheet and get those sheet clips to keep the sheets from sliding off. They remind me of mini suspenders and are like $3 at Walmart.
Actually, most online sites have lists of what you might need to take to college but keep in mind most of those places are aiming to sell you those things.
One thing you might want to invest in is a shower caddy to take your shampoo/conditioner, lotions, soaps, shaving cream, razors, etc. Many stores sell bathroom stuff (mirrors, soap holders, shower caddies, etc) that have suction cups which I highly recommend since you don't want to put your stuff down on a floor where who knows stepped on.
Another thing to invest in is a small cleaning kit. Seriously, public bathrooms are... EWW. College bathrooms are worse since janitors typically do not clean out those bathrooms since it falls to the responsiblity of the people living there. Again, EWW. So gloves, spray bleach, bathroom spray and disposable toilet bowl brushes are a must in my book. Then again, I can't use the toilet after my hubby without first cleaning it. EWW. EWW. EWW.
Some links for those "college checklists" (just keep in mind most of that stuff you won't use/need/or be allowed - like some colleges/university dorms prohibit microwaves/mini fridges/toaster ovens).

Oh and incidently on the locked box. I recommend, to another person a few years back after a roommate problem occured, was to buy a cheap cabinet from Walmart/Target/ShopKo for about $15 to $50 (depending on the size) then go to Lowes/Home Depot and buy a lockable hasp (about $5). Keep food items, toiletries and cleaning supplies locked up because you might find your roommate "borrowing" stuff without permission. That person in question was buying food only for the roommate to take it without asking or repaying her.
Actually, goldfish are pretty playful for fish. Mine, which are now five to nearly ten inches in length, are pretty playful. They follow your finger, come up to be petted or nibble on your finger. Except they're pretty stupid when it comes to our cats because they think the cats want to "play" with them. Stupid fish, they want to EAT you, not PLAY with you.

Here's what I would recommend to you man. Learn from the person who had to buy a $300 Chemistry book only to be used for one semester.
If you need to buy textbooks, DO NOT BUY THEM FROM YOUR BOOKSTORE!!. I would suggest buying them from...

3. Make sure that you know which books you need for each class.
4. Take the ISBN numbers from the back of the books and write them down on a piece of paper. You can also jot down the prices to see how much you saved.
5. Go to Half.com and click "textbooks" on top of the page. Then type in the ISBN numbers for each book.
6. Select the cheapest price and shipping cost. Media mail is the cheapest way to ship books (around $3 and takes about a week or two to arrive).
See how much I have saved for this upcoming semester....I could use that money to add to my winter vacation back to Japan!

I take it you've never been in a college dorm room. They're TINY. I had a single dorm room and frankly, my kids' bathroom is larger (and wider) then that room was.

wow. Well, you can still just get a bunk bed. So the room mate gets bottum, you get top. that works?

Not really. Schools provide the beds and mattresses. Most have policies where you cannot remove the furniture like beds/desks/dressers (whatever is provided by them). If they provide a bunk bed then you've got a bunk bed, if there are two single twin beds then there are two single beds.
I've stayed in several college dorms (boyfriend in one instance, my own in another, cheerleading camps, cheerleading competitions, another "boy friend" - he was just a male friend). The arrangement of the room depends on the school and type of room and living arrangements.
I've seen dorm rooms with four singles as well as two bunk beds, two single (twins) and of course a single twin bed. It really does depend on the college/university housing and their policies.
My recommendation is for people to learn what is allowed and what is not allowed because some schools have some crazy rules like not tape or thumbtacks or staples on the walls.
