What "rare/valuable" comics do you own?

I was being serious, I want to know. You said you liked The Walking Dead but now you can't read your copy anymore, it makes no sense. Your juvenile response says more than enough so I won't press the issue. You aren't worth the effort.

I've run into you're kind before you already view cgc as evil & nothing I say will say will change you're mind on that . You know it & I know it! The only reason why you made you're post was to crap on mine & bitch & moan about something you have no control over I bet you hate it when people don't open there toys to play with too You say you understand collecting yet you clearly do not as there are many various ways to collect, you also say you understand bagging & boarding yet you clearly don't understand that either ... Bags & boards were the start of grading ( If that!) & are made to insure comics stay in good shape/grade! CGCing simply insures that the comics do stay in said grade!

& If I wanted too I could simply crack the case open & take it out of the package at any time. You complain about not being able to read it & simply assume that I don't have another copy or another copy in some other format that I can read at any time You also complain about prices & value of comics but like you said comics are for reading not value! If someone wants to read a comic these days most have been collected in trades or hardcovers & companies are even jumping on the digital bandwagon with things like the ipad.

Any other questions or do you simply want to complain some more about cgc & value ?

Frankly I don't know enough about you to crap on you, but yes my issue is with the CGC. I take issue with it since it creates this false sense of value for modern comics based on ridiculous things such a character appearing. It is true I have no control over it directly but if I can convince people that it is bad idea than one day it may just disappear. And yes I was being preachy because I don't want the speculation market to resurface at all since that will kill the industry especially now that Marvel and DC are no longer seen as publishers by the parent companies. And while bags and boards are for protecting the comic, when you slab a comic it is solely to increase it's perceived value on the secondary market. Look here, there is something wrong with that. Now I believe that we should persevere comics especially the older rare ones, but the CGC isn't the answer.

As for different formats I personally don't enjoy trades all that much, they are wonderful for collecting hard to find material but honestly why read one when you already have the floppy. And digital is really a non starter in my book, but it could prove me wrong.

I use CGC. It protects your investment and also the item that you may hold a special place for. For example I'm a Flash fan and even though I have a large run of Flash comics loose, HC, TPB, etc, I wanted to have a copy of The Flash #1 graded. I'm not a seller or own a store, but the fact that I own a copy of The Flash graded - means a lot to me especially at a good grade (9.8 White Pages)

I'm not going to be sending anyone to college anytime soon but who cares? It displays nice, it protects it and who knows, it could increase 1 cent or 10 dollars down the road. The fact is that major auction houses use this method (or system) when selling books to potential buyers. In a world where everyone wants to knock-off everything and try to steal from others, CGC provides peace of mind for those that appreciate a good book.

Even if its an old book or a new book, it's all up to the buyer or collector. Where my copy of the Flash means a LOT to me, it may mean crap to someone else. CGC has come a long way since they started and I'm all for other companies to get their feet on that bandwagon, it would only benefit the collector or buyer in the end.

Dude, BlueSaint, not all people get comics graded strictly for sale on the aftermarket. I have considered getting my issue #1 of Invincible graded, but only because I bought Volume #1 of the Trade first. I fell in love with the comic, and Invincible has quickly become one of my favorite characters, and I would get it graded to preserve the quality.

Same thing would go if I had a copy of Detective Comics #27. The first appearance of Batman. If I had that, it would be graded in a heartbeat. And, I would never let it go. The only reason that I would sell it would be if I no longer had any need for it, and it would go to someone who appreciated it.

Also, comics have always been valued for the first appearance of a popular character. Like with Detective Comics #27. Sure, Issue 1 would be pretty valuable, but #27 is valued higher because it is the 1st appearance of Batman. Shoot, I still pick up comics for the 1st appearance of a character. Not because I want to make money, but because I like said character, and their fist appearance is valuable to me.

You know I am not going to bother debating point for point. But do you know why I am getting so worked over this? Because there is a good chance the speculation market could be coming back. Due to the weak economy many people will probably seek "safe investments" such as comics. Bolstered by the recent, let's be honest somewhat suspect, million dollar Superman/Batman comic auctions and last year's Obama Spider-Man issue. Which by the way shows the complete ignorance of so many when it is said to be a good investment, just due the sheer number made it is one of the most worthless comics. Now while I haven't been into comics that long, got back in June 2004, I don't want to see it come crashing down, and it could especially right now since Diamond is starting to show some cracks among other issues. And this bloat that the CGC puts on the secondary market does not help matters at all.

Well, unfortunately, this type of thing happens with any type of collectible.

Sad thing is, I was in a local store, called Comic Town, and they had issues of recent comics, bagged and boarded, going for $8-15. These were just variant covers of comics that came out earlier this month, and they didn't even have anymore of the "regular" covered ones. Pissed me off that I couldn't get it at face value, so I do see where you are coming from, but yeah.

Actually only $8 for a variant is rather cheap, it can get much worse. I am lucky that I have nice store, free bags and boards plus a 10% discount which for a small store is good. My whole point which was no doubt lost in my ranting is that we need to be smarter and not play into the games. Like not shelling extra money for a variant. But really my biggest beef with the CGC is who can honestly tell the difference between let's say a 9.8 and 9.7, which can cause the price vary by a wide margin. They don't even release the standards they use which raises some flags.

I do remember that a while back, when Wizard still printed the comics guide, that they had an article explaining the CGC grading process.
