Now is it a 50/50 variant cover or is it a special incentive variant cover ?!... Comic shops often have to order a set amount of comics To get said variant cover so IMO they have every right to sell it at a mark up... Odds are it was never on the racks to start with to be sold at regular price :S
Some times these are 1:10 (one variant cover for every 10 regulars) 1:25 1:50 ect ect ... This type of stuff has always been around...
So has comic collecting & uping the price .... Go read early fantastic four letter pages & even from # 3 up you will see people righting in asking others where they can get a FF #1 or 2 or what ever else they have missed at the stands & that they would be willing to pay $5-10 or what have you... & that was back in the early 40's or what have you when .05 cents was alot for a comic
Also people who collect comics or invest in comics for value are IDIOTS! YOu ask most people who collect cgc or even go to cgc forums & they will tell you the same thing There are far better things out there to invest in like gold & what have you
