What if they never had robots?

What would the world of sentai be without Giant Robos? Some say it would be a better program with better/longer fights and stories. Others say removing them would be like removing a piece of ones own heart.
Are they really that important? Maybe.
What would Sentai be without them, boring?

Whats your take?

1 of Sentai's selling point beside cute Sentai girls, are their mechas...they're awesome and I really like them. Can't imagine sentai without their robots...it's like watching Kamen Rider without HENSHIN!! :anime:

Well, some episodes will be just fine without any Mechas. Having mecha battles in each and every episode is unneccassary. You can have the heroes engaging in a really long fight and ended up destroying the monster, no need for the bad guys to enlarge the dead monster.

Enlarging monsters is an old formula that I think should be used lesser now. Or maybe change the plot a little bit. Heroes are still fighting, but before they destroy the monster, the other bad guys enlarge it when they're still fighting. Why enlarge when they're destroyed; just enlarge them at that instant!

But for those who grew up watching Sentai that its a must to have a robot, then they might find this new formula boring.

Well Hibiki doesn`t say "Henshin!" and wasn`t the original concept of Sentai just to be a super team until Battle Fever J debut with the "Super" in the title?

Yeah it's was TOEI's Spiderman Toku that was first to have a mecha and then that was added to Sentai forming SUPER SENTAI.

I don't think Sentai would be as sucessful as it is today without the mecha. Heck, I know when Power Rangers began what really got me into it were the Dinozords/Guardian Beasts.

Hmmmm....frankly? I'd like to see a modern series without them, if only just to give it a try. It might be better if the premise is right for it. However one thing to remember is that if you take the mecha out, that's one less thing for toys to be made of. Which, I would imagine to make up for such a thing there would likely be an increase of 'gimmick forms' or anything similar to make up for the lack of mecha, new mecha, and new mecha configurations. So I suppose it's a question of which is the devil you can live with.

Personally I felt like Gekiranger didn't do badly with the mecha concept. Admittedly some of the forms were poor, but it certainly didn't feel so awful as say....Engine-Oh or some others.

I think the problem with Mecha right now is that the sense of...escalation....is lost. If you remember Jim Gordon talking about such things at the end of Batman Begins, to me it smacked of...tension. With each new act of escalation building things towards the inevitable point where all hell breaks loose. I think that sense of escalation has been lost in Sentai for awhile, and the ever-present drive to merchandise has only shoved it farther under the bed. Thus mechas, powerups...they're devalued. They contribute little to the plot anymore, and I think generally many people could deal with a less-than-perfect mecha design if it was brought in say...a third to halfway through the series so it could MEAN something and you'd get that sense of escalation back.

Bottom line...do I think they could be ditched? For a series or two, sure. If we're all willing to deal with the consequences of such action. Otherwise I just think they need to be used better. Even Boukenger used them somewhat better with the Parallel Engine and Questers business. That at least gave some meaning to the mecha as opposed to just one more toy to sell.

I think mecha are a very creative element to Super Sentai. I think mecha were done best in the 80s and 90s. ESPECIALLY the 90s.

The only shows where I thought the mecha execution was meh were: Sun Vulcan, Liveman, Hurricaneger, Go-onger, Shinkenger, and Goseiger.

Of course there were many shows that was just average with the mecha. Should the show take them out? Well, I say yes and no.

YES: Just to REALLY shake things up with the show's formula. Plus, seeing as how mecha has been sucking in the last 3 years, it really makes me tired of seeing mecha at all.

NO: Mainly cause I've seen mecha executed very well and have seen it integrated with the stories. There's a lot of creativity, imagination, and epicness that can come out of mecha. This is why shows like Maskman, Dairanger, Kakuranger, Ohranger, Carranger, Megaranger, and GoGoFive are all amazing with what they do with mecha. I say keep the mecha, but PLEASE execute them with good quality.

I think mech is very integral to the success of Super Sentai, not just the merchandising sales but also to the series storywise. However, I do think the writers have became a bit lazy and complacent, and they don't really think before adding a mech fight to the episode. Alot of times right now it's just for toy placement, and there are times when I'd just skip it to get to the ending. I hope Toei won't keeping taking mechs for granted, and actually come up with better reasons to incorporate them into the episode. And there are times when they should've just take them out if they don't serve any purpose whatsoever.
