What exactly is wrong with TV-Nihon subs?

Kaizoku fansub
Enough said.

Samurai and ninja represent actualities of Japanese culture.
Comradery is not a concept exclusive to Japan and just because uses do not entirely overlap doesn't mean you have a free "don't have to try" card.
I'm sure our dear incompetent friends at KF had this suggested many times, but the show is about pirates and there's a perfectly valid word that pirates in fiction use to address their fellow crewmen.

The thing about "everybody understands what the word nakama means!" argument is that it's entirely too valid just as well.
The problem? Not everybody actually understands it.
It's hard to show such subs to people outside of the hardcore community and some people inside that community are likely to make some wrong assumptions about the untranslated words. I've seen it happening.

I had a discussion about this with Kaizoku fansub crew, and they pointed out an interesting argument: Words like ninja or samurais are never translated in english or other languages, people dont use "assassin" or "knight" for them".

So not translating a word like "nakama" for example, can be ok, because it has become widely known in the world of anime's fans, its not a problem if dictionaries dont accept those words, because fansubs have a different goal, they are not like universities or official translators.

Wow... If you are taking advice about translations from Kaizoku fansubs..... Talk about huge fail.:redface2::sly:

I would love to go to a mall or something and just conduct a survey to see how many people actually know the meaning of words like Nakama/Tachi/Onna/Kamen/Henshin/whatever Japanese words certain parts of our community think "sound better" or words they think "everyone knows". I imagine I'll be asked to repeat myself quite a few times for each word.

While we're at it, maybe a few years worth of lessons on the Japanese language and lifestyle should be included with any purchase of officially licensed anime or anything else from Japan. Because, apparently, that's the only way to fully enjoy the material. While we're at it, maybe we should forbid other countries from seeing American movies unless they've lived in America for a few years. :P

Besides, "ninja" and "samurai" are not equivalent to "assassin" nor "knight", respectively. Not all ninja were assassins and not all assassins were ninja. There were also vast differences between what a samurai was and what a knight was, particularly about their responsibilities and perks.

Samurai and ninja are also incidentally, in the English dictionary. While nakama isn't.

Dont forget, all those who created TVN left, or was kicked out except for the French member, who even do't work much fot TVN now

They deserted what they created because they putted their beliefs into a big jerk

Takenoko stole TVN by playing the nice guy
He was not even a founder

They trusted him so well

adekii
Drakkhen (Kingranger)
Drax
MetalDave

Those are the ones who made TVN so famous

Takenoko

One guy was enough to ruin it all

As in the KingRanger who's posted on this topic bashing TVN? I do remember seeing a KingRanger on some of the credits for TVN's Faiz and Blade subs. If it's the same guy then thats pretty funny. It makes sense that founders would be bitter towards Takenoko and the new TVN.

KingRanger has the idea but couldn't do it alone right?

Although he is not my friend...

He is right to be upset, they others as well

They trusted that guy, all along what he planned was to get better and better rank

The founders misjudged him, TVN fans don't give a darn as long they get their shows subbed
----------------------------------------------------

Yes KingRanger often acts like an ass....

But he can't be so bad judging stuff he does real life.... (that if he still a nurse)

very few people know that it all started on dalnet (i was a kiddo back then)

they wanted a channel where there is going to be less losers going there...

yes the founders of tvn didnt take care, how could they know one of their friends who said would help them in fact had mischievous opportunistic thoughts behind this?

also in their subtitles.... they should aska frenchy before mispelling french or missubbing it

like in akibaranger, Revolution becoming Rebellion ?

The heck.. it did sound like RE VO LU TION
Why they wrote RE BEL LI ON ?

Take still seems to think that because they buy the DVDs it means they can legally sub them :P

anyway im sure kingranger and the other founders if they start a new group wont do the same mistake again...

guys if you create a group, ddont give too much responsibilities to one guy, he may then try to steal it to you :P

What? Current TVN is actually tolerable as opposed to terrible TVN of over five years ago.
I'm judging the fansub of course, not personalities of the members (couldn't care less).

There are multiple reasons I am not with them any longer. The style takenoko wanted to KEEP the subs going was one of those reasons.
