What are your issues with Gaim?

Well, I can't say I agree with some/most of the stuff that's been posted already, but here are my main issues with it:

1.) It raises things to be big plot points when it needs them to be big issues, then drops them as soon as they're not relevant to the next story arc. This happened a lot throughout the Yggdrasil arc in which, as soon as one of their big conspiracies was foiled... the reasons behind it just stopped getting brought up. As soon as Yggdrasil no longer had a way to nuke the city to stop the secret of Helheim from getting out, they stopped caring. Look at the most recent episode: Helheim's fruit is all over the place and no one cares. One of the central conflicts of the show (Kouta unknowingly killing a friend) was set off because people without Drivers supposedly cannot control the urge to eat these things. But since that's no longer relevant to the plot, instead we're going to ignore that and focus on how it's from another world and Kouta is turning into a monster and so the only thing he can enjoy eating anymore is that.

2.) The technology really doesn't make sense when you look at it as a whole and, to that end, I feel they missed a lot of opportunities it gave or mishandled what they had with it. In fact, I really think it dropped the ball in regards to the technology, and I've even had a post written up about it that I've gone back and forth on posting for weeks now. Here's some examples of what I would've brought up in that post (that are basically copied from that document!):
- The Kurokage Troopers - The first instance that I felt the show dropped the ball was with these guys. I get that we lost the character who used this suit and they wanted to keep the design around, but at the same time, I feel like there was some wasted potential here. They could have given us a new design for grunt (or "trooper") characters, and losing the Kurokage suit completely would have given the actual Kurokage's death that much more impact. Also, why give your grunts that Lock Seed/"design" over any other one? From an observational standpoint, designing your grunt suits after the Rider that died first, or one of the Riders that wasn't doing particularly well if they were designed prior to that death, doesn't really make much sense.

- Belt inconsistency - It was around this point that I started wondering just what was up with the belts. I don't think they ever really went into detail as far as how they actually worked. Are they preprogrammed before being given to different people with the "Pre-Arms"? For instance, if Kaito had gotten that belt from Yuuya somehow, would he have had the "Gaim" Pre-Arms? When characters get new belts, as has happened a few times, the new belts seem to always have their "original" forms built into them. One would think that might mean the "Pre-Arms" actually form based on the user somehow (especially since the "face" on the belts only appear after transformation, implying they hadn't been set up with that form until that person transformed), yet other times they act as though they were programmed with that form.

- Musou Saber - Why is it only some characters have this and not others? Obviously only the main "Japanese" Riders seem to have it, but it seems odd that only a few Riders have an extra "built in" weapon but others don't. Now, admittedly, Takatora maybe having a special Driver made for him that includes this weapon would make sense, but that doesn't explain why Gaim has one. I would say that maybe they should have tried to come up with alternatives for all of the Riders depending on their "origin," but that might not have been possible. Separating the Riders like this when they should be on equal footing at this point seems a bit odd to me all the same though.

- Not taking advantage of the mechanic - This one is admittedly somewhat minor, and it's not a huge thing, but I do feel as though they've stuck a bit too rigidly to the idea that "X Lock Seed is X Person's" for the most part. For example, Kaito could have realistically picked an Orange, Kiwi, Durian, or any number of things when he was hoarding seeds the way he was, yet somehow he only ever had Banana and Mango to use. While it is absolutely fantastic that we finally have more than two Riders again, I think it would have been nice to see more swapping of Arms in the main series going on.

- Genesis Driver - Speaking of the mechanics, the Genesis Driver has always been strange to me in many respects. We go from a great idea to... this. No, I don't mean the "soda" part, but in that we go from everyone having fun and unique weapons to most of the active Riders (as Kouta eventually gets the equivalent of the Genesis Driver) having not only the same weapon, but the same boring weapon. I think a better way to handle this might have been to make the Sonic Arrow the Energy Riders' equivalent of the Musou Saber, and then give them all their own unique weapon beyond that that could maybe combine with the thing or something.

--- Genesis Core - For some reason, only one of these exists. For some reason, it makes new forms that conveniently look just like Gaim's Arms do. Is it because of the Orange? What would happen if Baron had used it? Why did Gaim only ever use it with Orange? They opened up a whole new world of Arms with this item, then did the bare minimum with it... and still stuck with that blasted Sonic Arrow for the weapon! Yet why? Gaim still had another Lock Seed in the mix, didn't he?

--- What are the fruits? Where did they come from? - Early on, it's implied the Energy Lock Seeds are, as I recall, creations of Ryoma - meaning they wouldn't be able to be found in the forest, as they were products of his science. However, when Gaim uses Kiwami Arms, these fruits are still called to him for some reason, implying that they are "natural" too, which doesn't make sense.

--- General Inconsistency - Let's look at some of the first Energy Riders. We had the initial four, all of whom had a new kind of Pre-Arms and a brand new type of Arms on top of that. Zangetsu even got a new Pre-Arms altogether. Gaim, just be using an Energy Lock Seed, gets his Pre-Arms altered and through mixing the two, gets a new Arms as well. On the other hand, Baron's Energy Arms, despite using an Energy Belt, uses his original Pre-Arms, and Shin Kurokage is the same damn suit every other Kurokage is.

All in all, I think it's been a bit messy. While I really do love the mechanic and think Gaim's designs, fruit and all, are fantastic, they really just dropped the ball in some respects here, and it was done a little too much for me. Maybe those things are minor for some of you guys, but that's the kind of thing I like, so yeah.

3.) Speaking of missed opportunities, while I love that we finally had a large cast of Riders again, a good deal of them just weren't used to the fullest. Oren, for example, has this huge gap between his first few introductory episodes (I have to blame the Energy Riders coming so soon after it) and the ones of the past few weeks in which this fairly threatening adult character is essentially reduced to a role not unlike Team Rocket. His and later Jounouchi's role as "annoyance" and "comic relief" got dragged out for too long - and I actually have no problem with comic relief or, for the most part, Gaim's use of it in general. It's with these characters, who were reduced to nothing but comic relief, that I have to feel aggravated, because they had so much potential - Oren in particular, which we've seen a whole lot of in these past few episodes. He's taken on Malika despite supposedly being outclassed, fought off Inves swarms, and even built a bomb. Imagine if they had taken more advantage of that (while still keeping him as affably fabulous as ever) earlier on?

Though I will say that I think his "crush" on Zangetsu was something we couldn't avoid - I almost have to wonder if one of the reason Oren even exists at all was to eventually be the one to point out that Zangetsu was being impersonated when he did, since literally no one else had really paid any attention to him. That's another story though.

Then, as I've brought up in the episode 45 thread, there's Minato. She is probably the biggest disappointment. Not because she died, because everyone is dying pretty much, but because of everything she did to that point. The other three energy Riders, even Zangetsu (who I will get to in a moment), all served fairly worthwhile purposes. Malika... didn't. She was just there and her big motive was literally just to serve the strongest and most charismatic guy left standing. At least Sid was the Lock Seed dealer and an antagonist, Ryouma was the brains behind so much, and Takatora had his role (which I am about to elaborate on).

In fact, I think one thing Gaim actually did that was pretty interesting was using a lot of its Riders as characters and focusing on that rather than focusing on them as Riders, and this is especially true for the three other Energy Riders, in my opinion. Even with their limited appearances as Sigurd and Duke, Sid and Ryouma made undeniable impacts on the story. Takatora may not have been the most important Rider outside of his few menacing appearances (at least when Takatora was behind the wheels), but Takatora the human was definitely a strong presence in the story, especially early on. Even now, as a hallucination, the character is/was still playing a role. Perhaps that's not the kind of thing a lot of people like seeing since it means the suit "assigned" to him is going to waste (in a way, I agree), but I actually think that's pretty interesting.

... On the other hand, returning to my point, Minato has nothing like that going for her. If she had been cut out of the story completely, other than in some fight scenes, very little would change. On the other hand, with the exception of maybe Jounouchi (though he at least still had some importance in the early part of the story), you really can't just erase any of the other characters without needing to change some things to compensate for that. Malika really added nothing, and that's a shame, because she had a whole lot of potential.

4.) Kouta not having had a monster suit for the past however many episodes. >:( They could still use Kiwami in the same way Eiji switched between his Greeed form and PuToTyra for a while, but c'mon guys.

5.) It had too many episodes shoved in that didn't matter. I'll give the ToQ/Gaim crossover a pass because it was awesome and I'm hoping we see crossovers like that every year from now on, but then you had Kikaider taking up a week, an episode for the movie that didn't really add anything, and so on. The show will still probably be tight even with having "lost" those episodes, but still.

Despite this wall of text, I'd still give the show an 8.5/10. Maybe even a 9/10 if the ending is good enough. It's not perfect and there were times when I was incredibly frustrated with it, but it's definitely the best thing Toei's done with the franchise in a long time (like pre-Kiva "long" time, at the very least), in my humble opinion.

Honestly, it comes down to two things. One is some wasted potential - primarily characters like Sid and Zach, who didn't really get enough development to justify their role in the greater story - but that's only in hindsight, they're not bad or anything. The other is a matter of pacing. Each episode raised the stakes, but due to it's format, very few of the episodes were really fulfilling, and those that were lost their impact during each week's wait between episodes. Madoka had the same problem, it's fantastic as a whole, but each individual part isn't very fulfilling, which isn't good for a weekly tv show.

As soon as Yggdrasil no longer had a way to nuke the city to stop the secret of Helheim from getting out, they stopped caring.

But that isn’t what happened though. They had more pressing concerns since they learn from Micchy that Kouta is after the Overlords, to try and make them control the forest which endangers Ryouma/Sid/Yoko’s personal stake in Yggdrasil. And of course once the secret gets it they throw him off a cliff and it becomes a free for all.

Look at the most recent episode: Helheim's fruit is all over the place and no one cares.

Because no one can stop it. The whole reason Yggdrasil wants to murder 6 billion people and why Kouta is so desperate to obtain the Golden Fruit in the first place is that no one can stop the spread of Helheim. You even have Takatora admitting that he can barely handle it when it was just cracks appearing and inves and vines popping up everywhere. Now it’s an entire city being engulfed by Helheim and the Inves everywhere with only 8 people around to deal with the Inves. How could they do anything about it?

- The Kurokage Troopers -They could have given us a new design for grunt (or "trooper") characters, and losing the Kurokage suit completely would have given the actual Kurokage's death that much more impact. Also, why give your grunts that Lock Seed/"design" over any other one?

I assume because the nut lockseeds are the most plentiful in contrast to the more rare fruit ones. And out of those: pinecone, acorn and walnut: the pinecone is the most versatile (able to use sidearms/flamethrower and pilot and work machinery) and has the best range (in contrast to Gridon)

- Belt inconsistency -One would think that might mean the "Pre-Arms" actually form based on the user somehow (especially since the "face" on the belts only appear after transformation, implying they hadn't been set up with that form until that person transformed), yet other times they act as though they were programmed with that form.

The undersuits are programmed into the belts and aren’t in the lockseeds. The only time this was an inconsistency is when Yoko uses Ryouma’s belt to transform. Otherwise there is no inconsistency here.

Because Gaim is basically the same as Zangetsu minus the headpiece.

Not taking advantage of the mechanic - While it is absolutely fantastic that we finally have more than two Riders again, I think it would have been nice to see more swapping of Arms in the main series going on.

IMO I don’t think Urobuchi really cared about this mechanic other than that time with Kouta using Banana. But it goes back to him not really caring about powerups like pineapple, strawberry or the jinba cherry or peach. The only power-ups that mattered to him seemed to be Jinba, Kachidoki and Kiwami for Gaim and Zangetsu Shin and Yomatsu Heguri for Micchy.

-- What are the fruits? Where did they come from? - Early on, it's implied the Energy Lock Seeds are, as I recall, creations of Ryoma - meaning they wouldn't be able to be found in the forest, as they were products of his science. However, when Gaim uses Kiwami Arms, these fruits are still called to him for some reason, implying that they are "natural" too, which doesn't make sense.

This shows a huge misunderstanding of the nature of the armor system in Gaim. None of it is “natural”, they were all created by Ryouma. It’s just that Kiwami Arms can call all armors because it’s just that powerful and the embodiment of ultimate power.

- General Inconsistency - Gaim, just be using an Energy Lock Seed, gets his Pre-Arms altered and through mixing the two, gets a new Arms as well. On the other hand, Baron's Energy Arms, despite using an Energy Belt, uses his original Pre-Arms, and Shin Kurokage is the same damn suit every other Kurokage is.

Because the data for Baron’s undersuit or “pre-arms” (as you call it) is stored in the belt and Ryouma kept the original Baron undersuit for Kaito’s belt. And the only alteration to the Gaim undersuit was to the helmet. Furthermore the Genesis Core and the Genesis Driver in the show are two completely different things. Unlike in the toy, it’s not the latch from the Genesis Driver that becomes the Genesis Core.

All in all, I think it's been a bit messy.

These things are less messes or contradictions and just things that you either don't get or disagree with (which does not make it a contradiction).

Oren, for example, has this huge gap between his first few introductory episodes (I have to blame the Energy Riders coming so soon after it)

What are you talking about? He shows up throughout the Energy Rider introduction. Zangetsu Shin uses him to incriminate and scapegoat and fight the Armored Riders. He is used again in their attempt to steal Kouta’s belt and on his own initiative tries to break up the Beat Riders’ gathering. He is MIA in the episodes which detail Kouta finding out all the dark secrets of Helheim (including Yuuya’s fate) and that has less to do with Energy Riders and more like he would stick out like a sore thumb in those stories (much like the Toqgers did in the Special between 23 and 24)

She was just there and her big motive was literally just to serve the strongest and most charismatic guy left standing. At least Sid was the Lock Seed dealer and an antagonist, Ryouma was the brains behind so much, and Takatora had his role (which I am about to elaborate on).
How is her motivation any different from Ryouma’s desire to “evolve” humanity with his belts or Sid’s desire for power that no can tell him what to do ever again? Really if you are talking about her role within Yggdrasil: she and Sid are pretty much the muscle to Takatora and Ryouma’s leadership and brains. But her motive isn’t anymore ridiculous than Ryouma’s or Sid’s.

... On the other hand, returning to my point, Minato has nothing like that going for her. If she had been cut out of the story completely, other than in some fight scenes, very little would change.

Kaito would have been killed by Demushu in the cave in their first meeting if she hadn’t saved her, he wouldn’t have gotten the Genesis Driver from Ryouma because she was the one who pressed him to give Kaito another chance and Kouta wouldn’t have been so insecure about him getting the fruit.

4.) Kouta not having had a monster suit for the past however many episodes.

Kamen Rider are Monsters.- Gen Urobuchi

I think Kiwami is pretty much his monster form. But also like the original Riders who are cyborgs/kaizo ningen while appearing human, Kouta can also appear human (and bled red), but in reality he is not human anymore.

so it's not as much of a necessity as Kenzaki using King Form since all of the other Riders in his show were useless assbags who didn't lift a finger to fight a monster.

"B..B..But,this one guy I met at the bar told me not to fight monsters anymore; I mean sure, I was a lil drunk but hey, he seemed reliable."

except that the few attempts at humor are more-often-than-not embarrassing rather than actually appealing to my sense of humor.

Same here.
And I don't give a flying frak if "anime did it too"; chances are if I was watching an anime and it had similar bad timing on its jokes, I'd still hate it.

Also, why give your grunts that Lock Seed/"design" over any other one? From an observational standpoint, designing your grunt suits after the Rider that died first, or one of the Riders that wasn't doing particularly well if they were designed prior to that death, doesn't really make much sense.

According to the official site, Kurokage is the most adequate for team work and combined attacks compared to the other Riders.

--- Genesis Core - For some reason, only one of these exists.

According to the official site, any Genesis Driver can get its Core part detached. There was nothing special about Kouta's Genesis Core in that sense. Although obviously, he's the only one to use it and only with Orange because it's the only suit that exists.

Early on, it's implied the Energy Lock Seeds are, as I recall, creations of Ryoma - meaning they wouldn't be able to be found in the forest, as they were products of his science. However, when Gaim uses Kiwami Arms, these fruits are still called to him for some reason, implying that they are "natural" too, which doesn't make sense.

I don't think that was ever implied. According to the official site, the Energy Lockseed are the same as the standard ones (transformations of Helheim fruits thanks to Ryoma's tech), but more technologically advanced.

On the other hand, Baron's Energy Arms, despite using an Energy Belt, uses his original Pre-Arms, and Shin Kurokage is the same damn suit every other Kurokage is.

Baron has his Sengoku Drive data according to the official site, which is also probably the excuse for him looking different from Duke, in spite of also using Lemon. However, still going by the official site, in spite of not looking like it, Baron Lemon Energy is supposed to have an Energy Arms undersuit. The parts and descriptions are all altered to match an Energy Rider's, although some are simplified since there's no actual visual change.

I guess, visually, in the show, one could point at that black area connecting area, which only exists for Energy Riders, and the sequence where his suit appears in the show also is modeled like the other Energy Riders, rather than the Sengoku Driver ones.

According to the official site, Kurokage is the most adequate for team work and combined attacks compared to the other Riders.

Also, the non-noble footmen during the Sengoku period were Yari-users. It was the "mass-produced unit" before gun-wielding infantry was used. Yari apparently were cheaper and easier to equip and train with.

yeah the whole finishers squash, au lait, sparkings not that but come on that sound so dumb especially on sengoku driver. genesis not too bad without au lait but it still has a freaking straw. and barons finishers, my god worst ever. bananas to hit people. if I were baron, I would never use my finisher

but then youd die

Gaim was the first test belt Yggdrasil publicly gave out. Probably needed to show off the features in the Beat Riders Hotline advertising and have one solid test subject to use it for Ryouma to create the Sonic Arrow.

My problems with Gaim.

I think the biggest problem with Gaim with really almost everything after episode 32 there was a huge drop in writing quality, which I think is only noticeable now:

1)The Overlord arc, which stretched from episode 33 to episode 41 really this could probably be termed as Gaim’s Jump the Shark moment. Previous to this the show remained mostly consistent, but I think a combination of budget and being forced to accommodate the Kiwami Arms spam really made a lot of this arc feel either pointless or feel like filler to pass the time. Some of the biggest ones:

-Kiwami Spam - the overuse Kiwami Arms every week (I guess as mandated by the Overlord Bandai) necessitates a lot of MOTW shenanigans, which really we could do without. A lot of the weak plots in the Overlord Arc were basically written to force the use of Kiwami Arms. The weak Micchy arc, but also the whole harvesting the life energy for the Queen thing as well as the entire episode devoted to breaking into Yggdrasil, which wastes an entire episode with gratuitous actions porn.. Furthermore the overuse of Kiwami also unrealistically makes Micchy/Zangetsu Shin more powerful than he appears as he overpowers both Baron Lemon and Kiwami Gaim. A scene which I have stated before was probably written as Jinba Lemon and Baron Lemon vs Zangetsu Shin.

-Micchy as the fake Zangetsu. Way too stretched out and way too unbelievable that Kouta and Mai never questioned him (until he outed himself) or that Yoko never tells anyone that Micchy was Takatora’s little brother. I think what really broke my patience was episode 33. If the arc had been confined to most 27 (where Micchy debuts as Zangetsu), 28 (Kouta resolves to fight him) and then 35 (where he reveals his perfidy to Kouta) that have been more satisfactory. But instead we have 33 shoehorned in there which pretty reduces him to a Dick Dastardely or Team Rocket or villain of the week type. If Urobuchi had played Kouta and Mai as willing to believe Minato and Micchy as more crafty and cunning and able to undermine Minato’s credibility in regards to him, I think it might have made Kouta and Mai looked less stupid and made the Micchy-Zangetsu Arc less tiresome.

-Redue’s collecting human life energy - there was also no payoff to this plot other than a brief appearance by the Queen in the end. It seems mostly a generic anime/toku type plot mostly as filler and to rationalize more Overlord fights with Kiwami Arms. And it wasn’t very well executed plot. The only thing enjoyable was Micchy not batting an eyelash when Redue hooks up Rat and Rica to the collars. I thought one nice modification to it might have been Redue using modified Sengoku Drivers instead as a means to drain people’s life energy to show how easily this technology meant to save humanity could be used to doom them.

2)While the Overlord Arc had a lot of weak material and filler: I think the post-Overlord Arc stuff has been a mess with plot holes, inconsistent characterization, repetitive scenes and terrible resolution to long term character arcs and plots. I don’t think I can even summarize everything wrong with everything post-41. But I’ll try.

-Yomatsu Heguri Arms - the supposed prototype that Ryouma locked up in his drawer. Not too unbelievable until it starts using Overlord Weapons that Ryouma just collected information on while breaking into Yggdrasil with Kouta. This would have been a decent resolution to Ryouma’s data collection if they actually stated it and it would have explained the Overlord weapons, but as explained as a prototype: this is just one giant plot hole.

-Ryouma’s characterization: his motivation is revealed to have been about “evolving humanity” using his belts. He is so jealous that he goes after Kaito who has become an Overlord without his belt. I thought this was a very weak explanation of his character. I know there are clues to this such as in the flashbacks in episode 27, but it was still very disappointing especially when the same flashbacks hinted at something deeper and closer to Kaito’s own obsession with power in that his disappointment with Takatora not being more ambitious or making himself ruler of humanity after Helheim comes resulted in him slowly turning on Zangetsu instead.

-Ryouma’s cartoonish death. He gets punched by Kaito into a wall, walks away from it, trips and falls off a building. This is some Looney Toons grade writing here. Was it too much to just have Kaito directly kill him by throwing him off the building or breaking his neck.

-the entirely explanation about alternate Mai. Her cryptic comments in the early episode are explained away as her spirit being unable to communicate clearly with everyone. This explanation is weak and it’s inconsistent since we know she was corporeal in episode 1 and was able to touch Kouta’s lockseed. What’s more her statements in episode 12 and 23, pretty much shows she can see alternate timelines. Something which is ignored here. Furthermore Mai's transformation destroys what little character development she had and turns her into a damsel in distress/object to be fought over. What is most galling is a character whom we have been told time and time again that her greatest strength is her optimism and optimistic view towards the future is reduced to crying and babbling about fate and its immutability.

-Minato’s death - badly done. We are suppose to believe an IED made by Oren could knock an Energy Rider out of their Transformation. I might have believed it, if the bomb was made out of a repurposed or jailbroken lockseed or the remains of his belt, but a regular bomb: no. And it was a terrible resolution to her and Kaito’s relationship. Looking at it now it seems like it was done mostly so they could end Gaim with a Kaito-Mai relationship and because Minato was one of the three who threw Takatora off a cliff (so she gets to get thrown off a building I guess). Also if Minato's and Mai's plots are suppose to be parallel like Ryouma-Kaito, Kaito-Demushu, Roshuo-Takatora-Kouta, Micchy-Sid, Micchy-Redue, it seems to be poorly done.

-too much of DJ Exposition - Sagara is definitely overused in these past episodes as a source of exposition. They could easily have reduced all these to one episode worth with him appearing to the different parties simultaneously at the same time, but giving them different tidbits as it suits his agenda.

-the entire subplot with Zack - bad filler only there to take up more screentime Like someone else said the only result was Kaito killing him with a CGI banana (unless he is not dead then what was even the point?!!!). Should have just had him turning on Kaito with Oren and Jounouchi and getting struck down by Lord Baron instead.

You misunderstand. I'm talking about Kaito's evolution into an Overlord. Ryouma's anger is because it wasn't accomplished through the use of his belts (other than Kaito holding back the poison with the Genesis Driver).
