On another note it surprised me when I found out the manga has been running since '88 with 76~ volumes.

Yep, it's still running. It's not only about action, there's a lot of comedy outside of the fights. The fights are done pretty well, it can get pretty technical with boxing itself. It goes into a lot of the mechanics of boxing. Like fighting styles, counters, etc..

The anime is being released in the US by Geneon on DVD under the title "Fighting Spirit". It's like 5 eps a DVD so it's priced decently well.
