V: The Original Series - Talk Up!

The original deserves just as much attention around here, if not more. So to start off, here's some vintage TV Guide ads I found for the original series.

I love The Original Miniseries. Certainly one of my top favorite sci-fi works. The Final Battle has a lot of the cool, classic scenes, but I always thought it was rushed, and that the drastically reduced budget did harm.

I don't care for the TV series...it's like whoever was in charge had no idea what V was about -- like they only had a vague idea of sci-fi, thinking it all to be something like "Spock's Brain." I thought it was a lot hokier than V was ever intended to be. That, and it made The Final Battle a waste.

I like that one ad with Diana for The Final Battle -- "Underneath it all..."

Wow & here I thought this was a "new" idea... Never had any idea this was based on something old... I LOL @ the V for victory bit! Also maybe I have seen some of the old stuff before just not remember it ... They sure got some of the cast bang on, compared to looks with the old...

For some reason that 2nd clip reminds me of stuff that happens in the robocop movies & maybe in ateam as well :S werid yes?

Kenneth Johnson was fired during the writing process for The Final Battle miniseries and he wasn't involved in the TV series at all. Which is more than likely why he ignored their continuity when he wrote The Second Generation.

Jane Badler's Diana remains one of the greatest sci-fi villians of all time. She dominated every scene she was in.

And yeah, I love that ad, too.

Kenneth Johnson was fired during the writing process for The Final Battle miniseries and he wasn't involved in the TV series at all. Which is more than likely why he ignored their continuity when he wrote The Second Generation.

The funny thing is that The Second Generation ends up just rehashing a few things from The Final Battle, and in an inferior way. I would have just preferred his novel be what his original plan for The Final Battle was before he walked, rather than it just being the screenplay he wrote set 20 years later and was never able to sell. The original characters just didn't behave like themselves in that novel, in what little they even appeared in it...

TSG was such a disappointment. As I said, I love The Original Miniseries, I've read for years how disappointed Johnson was with the follow-ups, so I was really interested in anything further he had to do with the series, as its creator, but he either didn't care or he just lost his touch. Some things should just be left alone. Johnson couldn't even be bothered to remember the gender of a key Visitor character! And he didn't even bother to let you know what happened to characters like Elias, Daniel, or Robin, he just dropped characters like that. I thought he should have addressed what happened to them, since he was ignoring The Final Battle and series, and character outcomes found there. It seemed like he barely had an idea and just wanted to get it out there as quickly as possible, without really revisiting his original and realizing what made it so special.

Just recently Syfy/Sci-fi aired the whole original mini-series. This show takes me back. Good times.

Yes, indeed. Still as epic and sweeping as it was back then, too.
