I recently finished rewatching this and it is still my favorite Ultraman, favorite toku, possibly favorite anything ever.
SciFiJapan did a bunch of interviews with the key staff for the 10th anniversary. (part 1, part 2, part 3) There's some information about the production, but I liked the stuff about the story themes more. It wasn't all that different from what I got watching the show (i.e. "never give up, even when things are difficult), but it's pretty neat to hear them talk about it anyway. One of my favorite parts is probably when they mention the actor for Komon telling them what being a hero meant.
It's interesting to find out why some things about the show where the way they are. Hasegawa (the writer) says that at the time, he was unsure what "justice" meant, so he tried to approach the subject by starting from "evil", which is why the early episodes had such a gloomy tone. Also nice to find out how dedicated they were at expressing the story themes. Apparently a few things in the final episode weren't in the script, but the director thought the series needed it to work.
Anyone who saw Nexus should watch these. They made me appreciate the show even more.
