Ultraman Mebius= Jetman + Gokaiger in the Ultra series franchise

...are you sure you're thinking of Nexus?

The only Ultra who's ever fought human sized on a regular basis has been UltraSeven in his various series (X included).

Tiga did it once, Ultraman WAS human sized once but didn't fight, and I don't recall Nexus ever fighting at human size.

Still. I will make on thing clear on Nexus-even though it's a more mature take on Ultraman, it still holds true to the basics of the franchise and is a worthy series. Light will find a way.

IMO Mebius beats both Decade and Gokaiger in terms of being a good anniversary show.

It never felt like they were going "fanfic" on you by throwing in random stuff from older series just to please the fanboys.
Instead they actually follow up on plots from some of the older shows and sometimes use knowledge from previous defense groups in order to defeat the monsters.

When you get to the episodes featuring the older Ultramen and actors playing them, you will be amazed at how well the writers handle them.
It makes many of the tribute episodes in Gokaiger seem very very lazy.
Especially the Ultraman 80 episode was one of the best written episodes I have ever seen in modern tokusatsu.

You have a LOT to look forward to

Very much agree, especially in the bold. Though the only downfall of Gokaiger, IMO, is that, there weren't many tribute episodes for the 70's & 80's series. It just focused much on the 90's & 2000's series.

Oh, and if giant battles is not your thing, then this show has plenty of normal sized battles.
The Ultramen are even seen fighting normal-sized.
I'm not against the giant battles. Whenever I fancy a change from Sentai and Riders I put a Godzilla film on and I'm slowly working my way through that series. Something about the Ultras just hasn't been working for me though, so I'll be sure to check out such a different show.

I figured that was because tributes for those series weren't a part of the original plan for the show, plus the writers for Gokaiger themselves know less about those older shows. Plus the actors from the older shows are either much further in their careers or retired from acting, and therefore potentially not making themselves available for as large an amount of time.

I've watched a big bunch of Mebius now, and indeed, it's a very true tribute to the Ultra franchise, and seeing those actors having played former Ultramen come back more than 30 years after their respective series aired is amazing.
Interestingly, I've seen episode 34 of Mebius, which is the "Ultraman Leo" tribute; it reminded me a lot of the Jetman tribute, sice they had a similar theme; the protagonist is scolded by the veteran because he's unable to defeat the enemy, and then is forced to grow stronger to defeat him; there are similar elements between the relationship Leo/ Mebius and Gai Yuuki/ Marvelous; it's pretty fitting that in each franchise, the episode being a tribute of one of the most tragic season of their respective franchise have a similar theme.

hey, GUYS (sorry, couldn't resist); I've finished Ultraman Mebius; and I can say that that series is really great; it's indeed a great tribute to the Ultra franchise, with the return of former Ultra heroes (and most importantly, their original actors) and monsters, but it has also a lot of value from its original material: it has probably one of the best cast among the main characters, with very likable protagonists, with very diverse backgrounds. O fcourse, Mirai/ Mebius himself is great. But what is also great in Mebius is the presence of some story arcs, with some recurring villains (like the Bogal, Yapool and Four heavenly kings), and the final Big Bad is nicely forshadowed through the series, and the final trilogy is great. Moreover, the Ultraman Hikari characters, with his anti-heroic traits was nicely done too. Mebius is of course less arc driven than Nexus, but more than most Ultra series. But one of the best points of that series is how much it shows the importance of the defense crew in defeating the enemies as Ultraman's helpers; and the fact that, unlike most Ultra series, the crew learns of Ultraman's real identity midway through the series is great, because the GUYS crew are able to have a real relationship with their Ultraman partner; seeing them interacting with Mirai knowing he's Mebius is very heartwarming, and brings so much in Mirai's bond with Ryu and the others.
To sum up, even for people who haven't watched Showa Ultra series, I still highly recommand Ultraman Mebius.
