The Monkey King

Episode 1
The Monkey King on Spiral Mountain

+-+-+

In the ancient land of Splendoria, there was Spiral Mountain. This mountain bore fruit and flowers all year long. Since the dawn of creation, a boulder sat on the mountain peak. The four worlds formed again and yet again, and eventually the pure essences of Heaven, the moisture of the Earth, the powers of the Sun and the Moon, all focused on this boulder, which was called ‘Thought.’ Over time, the boulder was bathed in these energies, and it became magically fertile. Then, at last, it cracked open to release its young, and from this stone emerged a monkey!

The rays of light that flowed from the monkey’s eyes caught the attention of the citizens of Heaven, but when they realised it was just a monkey, they decided it was none of their concern.

For decades, the stone monkey enjoyed his life of eating fruit, sleeping under the stars and playing on the mountain top. Then one day, he ventured to go down, where he found his brethren apes, gathered near a waterfall that poured down into a clear river. Standing on a rock, the stone monkey called out.
“What’s going on here?â€
“Who are you?†one of the monkeys asked.
“I am the monkey born from the rock!†the stone one responded. “So what’s happening? Why are you all gathered here?â€
“We’ve all come to a decision,†said one of the monkeys. “Behind the waterfall is the Water-Curtain Cave. Nobody knows what’s in there. Whoever is brave enough to pass through the falls and into the cave will be our king.â€
With a big grin and a sparkle in his eyes, the stone monkey leapt through the waterfall as easily as a hot knife through butter. Inside, he found a golden throne and a crown. He lifted the crown and placed it on his head, then sat on his throne. The title of king was his!

For many years, he was celebrated as a great ruler, but as time went on, the stone monkey began to grow worried for his own mortality. After all, he was still quite normal, despite his birth and his position. One day, rumours were spread around the kingdom of the apes. The rumour was that there was a secret to immortality, a way to avoid the wrath of oblivion.
“Who started this rumour?†the monkey king demanded. “Bring them to me!â€
So they did. The one who told this tale was an old, wise monkey. His fur was grey, his eyes were weak, but he knew knowledge far beyond that of the other apes.
“You, old man,†said the stone monkey, “what is this I’ve been hearing about the secret to immortality?â€
“I was hoping you’d ask me, Your Majesty,†said the old monkey. “Buddhas, immortals and sages are exempt from the turning of the wheel of fate. From birth and destruction. They are as eternal as Heaven and Earth.â€
A wide smile curled on the stone monkey’s lips. It only took him a second, to decide what he would do next. He quickly packed a few small supplies, and soon, he stood at the foot of the mountain, his followers watching him.
“Goodbye for now my friends,†he said. “I’m off to find immortality, wherever it is hiding!†As he turned and began his journey, his followers cheered him on, in hopes that he would find his prize and return home safely.

For many years, he travelled across the world, in search of the secret of immortality. Then one day, as he was travelling through the mountains of China, he came upon something surprising, floating in front of him. At first, the monkey king thought it was a blue butterfly, but then he realised it was a female fairy, dressed in a simple blue gown and blue sandals.
“…Are you the one?†the fairy asked after a long silence.
“The one?†the monkey inquired. “What do you mean by ‘the one’?â€
“My master, Patriarch Subodhi,†the fairy explained, “sent me to find someone willing to study the way to immortality.â€
“That’s me!†the monkey cried excitedly. “I’m the one!â€
“Then come with me,†said the fairy.

Soon, they came to a cave. Above the mouth of the cave was a blue, crystal crescent with three dark blue spheres inside it. This was the Cave of the Slanting Moon and Three Stars. The fairy and the stone monkey walked inside. The fairy bowed down.
“Master Subodhi,†he said, “I have found the one.â€
Sitting cross-legged on a dais was a man in a blue robe. He looked as old as Heaven, yet strong and healthy. His eyes shone with an azure light, and his flowing, white beard trailed before him. Before the monkey could utter a word, the Patriarch spoke.
“What is your name, young one?†he asked.
“I have no name,†the monkey replied, “for I was born from a magic stone.â€
The Patriarch smiled and pointed at his new charge. “Then I shall name you ‘Kai Candle,’ for your burning passion and determination.â€
Kai bowed down, smiling. “Thank you.â€
“Come close and listen carefully,†said the Patriarch. “I am going to reveal the secret to my long life.â€

Patriarch Subodhi trained Kai Candle how to increase his life, just as he himself had done. Kai was a willing student, who did everything his master said, to the very last detail. Then one day, the old man revealed the next step of his disciple’s education.
“Kai,†he said, “it is time for you to learn how to ward off the ‘Three Calamities’.†Kai looked at his master oddly. He rubbed the top of his furry head in confusion. After a lengthy pause, he spoke.
“Master, there must be some mistake. The secrets I’ve learnt protect me from fire, water and all diseases. What are these ‘Three Calamities’ you speak of?â€
“The secrets you’ve learnt will preserve your youthful appearance and increase the length of your life,†the Patriarch explained, “but in 500 years, Heaven will send down lightning that will destroy you utterly unless you have the sagacity to avoid it. After another 500 years, fire will spring from within and consume you, leaving you as a charred skeleton. Then even if you escape this, in another 500 years, a mighty wind will come, melting your bones and flesh and dissolving your very being.â€
“That’s terrible, Master!†Kai gasped, covering his ears with both hands.
“All is not lost, my student,†the Patriarch continued. “I will teach you the techniques to avoid the Three Calamities – the 72 earthly methods of transformation, the cloud somersault, and the art of cloud flying.â€

Many years passed, and once Kai had learned everything the Patriarch could teach him, it was time for him to go back to Spiral Mountain. Master and pupil stood opposite each other in a forest not far from the Cave of the Slanted Moon and Three Stars.
“Kai, you have been a good student,†the Patriarch spoke, “and it has been an honour to pass my teachings onto you. Now you must return to your family.â€
“No, Master,†Kai responded, “I cannot consent to go until I have repaid you in full for all your kindness.â€
“I have no desire to be repaid,†said the Patriarch. His voice then turned strict and cold. “I am convinced that one day, your monkey nature will lead you into no-good. Therefore, I forbid you to tell anyone that you are my disciple. Do I have your word that you will honour my wishes?â€
“I promise,†Kai nodded.
“Then I wish you a happy life,†the Patriarch smiled. Kai looked up at the sky. A long silence followed. Then, with a happy cry, Kai jumped into the air. He put two fingers in his mouth and whistled. A pearly white cloud formed under him and with that, he flew away. The Patriarch watched him until he had disappeared completely, then began his return to the cave.

Episode 2
King Kai Candle and the Magic Wishing Staff

+-+-+

King Kai returned to Spiral Mountain, and he gasped in surprise. War had broken out. His ape brethren were in combat with an army of green and black nature spirits. The spirits were winning. Kai grimaced and jumped off his cloud.
“Get away from my brothers, you fiends!†Kai grabbed two spirits and slammed their heads together.
“Your Majesty!†one of the apes called. “You’ve finally returned!â€
“Of course, I’d never abandon you,†Kai smiled. He punched a spirit in the gut and then threw another one off the mountain. “Let’s get ‘em, boys!â€
Soon, the battle was over. The monkeys celebrated all night with fruit and wine, and King Kai once again took his place as their immortal ruler. He had a taste for a good fight now, and that was something that would stay with him forever.

Over the many coming years, spirit and beast were always at war. Every battle involved the apes, and their leader, the mighty King Kai, was always in the thick of it. The citizens of Heaven were starting to grow annoyed from the noise he kicked up. Then one day, Kai came to a decision. As he sat on his throne, with his followers around him, he made his proclamation.
“A great king like me deserves a powerful weapon!†he cried. “Therefore, I will go on a search for a weapon that suits me!â€
“Your Majesty,†said one ape, “I hear tell that the Dragon King of the Western Ocean has many otherworldly weapons in his armoury.â€
“Then I will travel to the Dragon King’s castle,†the stone monkey declared, “and I shall find for myself, a weapon!â€
Without another word, he dashed out of the cave and jumped into the air. He whistled loudly, summoning his cloud and flying away. The Dragon King of the Western Ocean’s palace was deep beneath the waves, so as he disappeared beneath the surface of the ocean, Kai transformed himself into a manta ray.

Once he entered the doors of the palace, Kai returned to his regular body and walked down the corridor. Two dragon guards stepped in his way, holding tridents. Kai smirked and grabbed the two guards, lifting them easily and throwing them away. He pointed to a passing servant.
“You!†he roared. “Go tell your king that I wish to see him immediately!†The terrified servant ran for his life. He dashed to the throne room and bowed before the Dragon King of the Western Ocean, a bearded old man in a scaley, teal gown and a dark blue cap.
“Your Highness,†said the servant, “a monkey has arrived, demanding an audience with you!â€
“A monkey?†the Dragon King asked. “How strange…is he a warrior?â€
“If throwing two guards aside like pebbles says anything, then yes.â€
“None of your cheek. Bring him to me.â€
“Yes, Your Highness.â€
Kai was brought before the Dragon King and his daughter, as well as their highest royal advisors and guards. Despite their attempts, the dragons failed to force Kai to bow. In the monkey’s opinion, a king didn’t have to bow in the presence of another.
“I heard you’ve been causing trouble in my court, money king,†said the dragon.
“I have come to partake of your legendary armoury,†Kai replied.
“Why should I give you any of my weapons?†the dragon demanded.
“Because, and I’m sure you understand, every good king needs a weapon,†the stone monkey told him smugly.
“I think I may have the perfect weapon for him,†the Dragon Princess said. She took Kai’s wrist and led him down a pearly corridor, laden with colourful banners and ancient artefacts. The Dragon King followed, curious to what his daughter had in mind.

After several hours of walking, they entered the armoury. The room spread out for miles, and was filled with armour and weapons of all kinds. Paintings of ancient battles hung on the walls. Kai looked around in awe. The Dragon Princess led him over to a glass display case on the wall that spread out a whole 10 metres. The item inside was a thick, black staff with gold on each end and gold markings along the surface. It was as thick as a tree trunk and looked incredibly heavy.
“This is the magic wishing staff,†the Dragon Princess explained, “and it was used to create our world many millennia ago. If you can lift the staff, it’s yours, along with a single suit of armour of your choice.â€
“I never back down for a challenge,†Kai smirked. “Open the case.†The Dragon Princess performed a hand gesture and the case flipped open. The monkey stared at the weapon, and then reached out for the weapon. As he touched it, the staff shrunk to the size much more suitable for him. He lifted it easily, and laughed as he threw it up and caught it. The dragons were astonished.
“I won your little challenge,†Kai taunted them. “Now I get to choose a suit of armour to go with it. After that, I’ll be on my way!â€
“Damn you…†the Dragon King muttered under his breath.

As the sun began to set, Kai streaked across the sky on his cloud, holding his magic wishing staff, and dressed in a suit of body-hugging but very tough gold-and-crimson armour. The fiery plumage on his gold helmet blew in the breeze.

The fighting began again soon enough. In Heaven, the great master, King Light, was growing increasingly annoyed. He and his wife, Queen Unity, had been up for several nights now, unable to sleep through the noises from the Earth. The other gods were agitated as well. The two messenger brothers, Dirge and Stanza, flew up onto Heaven and landed, bowed before their king and queen.
“Ah, you’ve returned,†said King Light. “What news?â€
“It’s that monkey king, as you suspected,†said the brothers in their usual unity. “He has gained incredible power, weaponry and armour, and claims that he is the greatest warrior on Earth! He claims he deserves a place in Heaven!â€
“Impudent little twerp,†snarled Brother Tahu, the god of fire.
“Now, now,†said King Light, “if he wants a place so badly, he must prove himself in three challenges, the Three Calamities. If he can survive all three, then I will grant him a place in our pantheon. Deliver this message to him.â€
“Yes, King Light!†Dirge and Stanza said together.

On a bright summer morning, Kai was still sleeping peacefully, clutching his magic wishing staff against him tightly. A monkey came in and shook his shoulders.
“My king,†said the monkey, “the messenger gods are outside, they wish to see you.†Kai awoke and sat up.
“Is that so?†he asked. “Take me to them, I’ll find out what this is all about.â€
“Yes, my liege,†the monkey obeyed. He led Kai out of the cave and into the open. Dirge and Stanza were waiting for them at the edge of the waterfall. Several monkeys stood nearby, watching with interest. Kai tapped the ground with his staff and rested one hand on his hip.
“What can I do for you?†he inquired.
“We bring a message from King Light,†said the twins. “He is aware of your claims, and knows you wish to join holy host. If you can survive the Three Calamities, over the course of 1, 500 years, then you will be given a place in Heaven. Do you agree to this?â€
“Very well,†Kai nodded. “Tell King Light I agree to his challenge, and I will earn my place in Heaven.â€

Episode 3
King Kai Candle Faces the Three Calamities

+-+-+

For the next 500 years, King Kai trained in order to face the first of the Three Calamities – lightning. He trained hard and endlessly, remembering the teachings of his great master, the Patriarch Subodhi. When the night came, he stood on the top of Spiral Mountain and spread his arms.
“Come at me then, First Calamity!†he cried out. “I challenge you!†He reached behind his ear and plucked out a black needle. With a simple thought, he made the needle grow into the magic wishing staff. He stood waiting. Eventually, he saw the lightning streaking down towards him from the sky. He swung the staff and immediately, his armour turned from metal to rubber. The lightning hit him and was held fast by his insulating clothes. When it was all over, he dispersed the captured heat and returned his armour to normal. He pointed at the sky mockingly.
“No element can harm me, for I am the Equal of Heaven!†he bellowed.

In Heaven, the pantheon watched with interest and then disgust, because now the monkey was waving his posterior at them.
“So he survived my lightning,†said Brother Sonsaku, god of storms.
“Impressive,†King Light added, “but two Calamities remain.â€
“Your Majesty, I will be the one to destroy this insolent ape,†Brother Tahu declared.
“You must wait a whole 500 years first,†King Kai warned. “If you even a day out of place, I’ll have my blood brother deal with you.†Nearby, Duke Dark, the king of hell and the Damned Sea, stood with his wife Duchess Pain and their young offspring, Son Ukitso, grinned devilishly at Tahu. The god of fire glared at them.
“Should Tahu fail,†said Brother Lewa, god of wind, “I promise I will put an end to this disturbance.â€
“Lick-boot,†Brother Tahu muttered.
“If it keeps me as your superior, then gladly,†Lewa responded.
“Enough of that now,†said Queen Unity in a flat tone. “Brother Tahu, go and prepare. In 500 years, unleash your power on Kai Candle. Tear him apart from the inside and end this humiliation.â€
Brother Genpou, god of war, licked his lips and sighed. “Oh, Unity, I never realised what a sadistic side you have. You’re turning me on.â€
King Light glared at his brother-in-arms and hissed. “Any more talk like that, Genpou, and I’ll finish you off myself.â€
“Touchy, touchy,†Genpou sneered, shrugging his shoulders and casually walking away from the other gods.

For the next 300 years, King Kai and his warriors fought with demons like before, training their bodies, developing their bodies and spirits. Inside though, King Kai was slowly gaining a more vicious side. A side that was not his, but more like an evil personality, growing and feasting on his lust for violence. Then for 100 years, Spiral Mountain was engulfed in many celebrations, for the last demons were driven away. The apes consented to eat, drink and be merry. Even the women and children had a good time. For the final 100 years, King Kai decided to live alone on the mountaintop, to train for his next two trials and his inevitable place in the Heavens.

Eventually, the day came. Standing in a wooden bucket, Kai felt the fire burning inside of him. It was painful, but he managed to concentrate on the correct spell. He changed into a pool of water and splashed into the bucket. The fire was extinguished, and when he returned to normal, the damage had been repaired. All over the world, people could hear the furious roar of the enraged Brother Tahu, and the feminine chuckle of Brother Lewa.
After another 500 years, a great wind blew across Splendoria. When it reached Spiral Mountain, Kai transformed into a statue and no matter how strong the wind was, he remained unmoved and unhurt. When Lewa tired and allowed the wind to stop, he fell off of Heaven and landed on the mountain top with a thud. Kai returned to normal and knelt down beside the downed deity.
“I’ve beaten all three of the Calamities, Brother Lewa,†said Kai. “Now you must take me up to Heaven so I can be given my rightful place.â€
“V…very well,†said Lewa as he tried to catch his breath. “At least let me get my second…w…wind…â€

Kai looked around Heaven with a huge grin. He was brought to the council room where the pantheon was gathered, along with several servants and other angels.
“We admit defeat to you, Kai Candle,†said King Light. “I did not think you could do it, but you overcame our challenges. You were taught by a great master. Who was he?â€
“I can’t tell you, I promised him I would never reveal his name,†Kai replied stoically. “Now what position will you be giving me?â€
“We have decided to make you the Keeper of the Heavenly Fruit Garden, alongside Sister Flora.â€
“You’re making me a posh gardener?!†Kai growled.
“It’s that or nothing,†King Light responded, losing his patience. Kai clenched his fists, then relaxed. “Fine, I accept your decision.â€

The Heavenly Fruit Garden blossomed all year long. There were many trees, both young and old, and all of them bared fruit. Kai’s armour had been exchanged for a heavenly gown, like all the gods. His was brown with black patterns. Underneath, he wore a red jacket with gold trim, a white vest, red trousers with gold ankle cuffs, a studded, tiger skin belt, dark blue slippers and dark blue wristbands. His magic wishing staff was reduced to the size of a needle once again and was hidden behind his ear. Sister Flora, goddess of nature, was showing him the different trees.
“The apples grant you great strength of mind,†she explained, “the oranges give foresight, the bananas allow you to see through even the darkest night, and the peaches grant you immortality.â€
“What about the strawberrieplums and pears?†Kai asked.
“They just taste good,†Flora giggled.
“Oh, I, er, see,†Kai murmured, blinking a few times in rapid succession.

King Kai Candle Goes Wild About Heaven

+-+-+

A great fruit banquet has been scheduled to take place between the pantheon, their disciples and the Three Buddhas, who were revered even by King Light, as the great teachers of their world. Heaven was busy as the citizens prepared themselves for the arrival of the three brothers.
Kai had been living in the Heavenly Fruit Garden for five years now, and he was bored. He had been eating the fruits for sustenance, and still, hundreds of them grew. He was unaware of the banquet, and when he found out, he was angry.
Sister Flora’s handmaidens came into the garden to pick fruit for the event. Kai jumped out of nowhere and landed in front of them.
“Hey!†he demanded. “Who are you and why are you picking these fruits?â€
“T-they are for the banquet,†said one of the handmaidens. “All of the gods, as well as their disciples, the angels, and even the Three Buddhas, will be there.â€
“WHAT?!†Kai demanded as his rage built. “I was not made aware of this!â€
“M-maybe your invitation was lost,†another handmaiden said timidly.
“It was not lost,†said Flora, stepping into the garden. “King Light and Queen Unity don’t want you there because you’re such a troublemaker.â€
“I’ll eat you all!†Kai roared, baring his fangs. Flora and the handmaidens screamed and ran out of the garden. The stone monkey screeched and jumped about like an ape possessed, then gave chase. He pulled out his staff and used it to smash paintings, vases and statues as he rushed around the halls of Heaven.

Brother Toutaku, the god of heroes, and his lover Sister Seras, goddess of love, were walking together, when Sister Flora and her handmaidens ran past in their panic.
“What’s going on?!†Toutaku explained.
“Come back here so I can eat you!†Kai screeched. “You deceitful wenches!â€
Toutaku pushed Seras behind him and unsheathed one of his four magic swords. He stood in front of Kai and held the sword forward. Kai stopped and swung his staff. Toutaku blocked with his sword.
“Get out of my way!†the stone monkey demanded.
“I’ll not let you hurt those women,†Toutaku shot back, “you filthy ape!â€
The two duelled through the corridor. Sister Seras ran to get help. Toutaku blocked Kai’s staff then swung at his legs. Kai hopped to dodge and then came from the right with his staff. Toutaku blocked again and pushed Kai back a few steps. They pulled back and struck each other’s weapons again. Kai used his tail as a prop and brought both feet up, kicking his opponent in the gut. Toutaku stumbled back. Kai struck him across the head with his staff, knocking him to the floor. Kai shrieked and ran up the hallway.
“Stupid gods,†he hissed. He fell on his rear end with a cry and looked back. Toutaku had grabbed him by the tail and was dragging him back.
“Don’t you dare ignore me,†snarled the god of heroes.

Sister Seras didn’t stop running until she found Son Kounin, god of the sun. She was panting, eyes wide, with tears pouring down her pearly cheeks. Son Kounin held her by the arms.
“Seras? What’s wrong?†he asked.
“It’s that monkey king,†Seras replied hoarsely. “He’s gone mad. Toutaku’s fighting him right now, but I don’t know how long he can hold out.â€
“All right,†Kounin nodded. “I’ll tell my parents and round up the Heavenly Knights. You go find Sister Judge Ryofu and the others. We’ll stop this monster.â€
Seras nodded and the two deities ran off in different directions.

Kai jumped at Toutaku, but the god of heroes rolled out of the way and unsheathed another sword, whacking the flat of the blade on the monkey’s tail. Kai screamed in pain and fell on all fours. He glared at Toutaku and his eyes turned pure white.
“Never…touch my…tail!â€
Kai roared as he twisted around and sliced his hands up through the air. Two lines of blood burst out of Toutaku’s body and he fell on his back, eyes squeezed shut in agony. Toutaku looked up at him, coughing up blood.
“Quit staring at me, pal,†Kai chuckled. “You’re making me five kinds of self conscious here. Ah well, let’s see if gods can die.†He raised his staff, when Seras’ voice boomed out. “Don’t you touch my fiancée!â€
Chains shot out from all directions and wrapped around Kai. The monkey king dropped to his knees and the magic wishing staff fell to the floor. The chains came from the sleeves of the gown worn by Sister Judge Ryofu, goddess of justice and punishment. The entire pantheon was gathered in the hallway now, infuriated. Seras knelt down by her beaten lover and rested his head on her lap. Son Kounin and the Heavenly Knights lowered their golden swords at their captive’s neck.
Sister Angelica, goddess of magic, walked forward, and slapped the monkey across the face.
“You foul, disgusting, violent beast!†she snapped. “Your master must be ashamed of you!â€
Sister Mouki, the deaf-mute goddess of silence and contemplation, and daughter of Toutaku and Seras, began to perform hand gestures in her own little language. Sister Ryoko, goddess of the moon, translated for her.
“When you were born, you were content with your life, and when you became king of your kind, you were happy. Even when you sought immortality, you were ready to go on with your life. Once you had a taste of battle, your life went downhill. The violence took over your mind, and the good little monkey was gone. Therefore, your punishment should be one that will make you learn patience and humility, in hopes of redeeming how you once were.â€

“It is my decision,†said King Light, “that you are to be pinned beneath a mountain. Your followers will be forced to select a new king, until your return…if you return. Sister Judge Ryofu, cast him down! Brother Fargus, create a mountain so heavy that even you cannot lift it!â€
Brother Fargus, a 10ft giant of a god, held his Hammer of 1000 Metals, as a hole opened in the cloud floor. The chains came undone, and Kai fell down towards the Earth, screaming. He landed hard and his staff clattered down beside him. Before he could grab it, a huge mountain came down and landed on him. Only his head, shoulders and hands were out in the open. For added torture, Brother Sonsaku created a downpour of rain.

For many hours, Kai lay under the mountain, his rage subsiding. He began to cry.
“Please,†he begged hoarsely, “let me out…I’m sorry…I can’t live like this…let me out…â€
“Poor, poor monkey, we know how you feel,†said a soothing voice, “but King Light’s decisn is final.â€
“W…who’s there?†Kai asked weakly. Sister Maestro Benatar, goddess of music, appeared beside him and knelt down. She placed her hands on each side of his head and began to sing softly to him. Tears rolled down Kai’s head, until the goddess’ singing allowed him to drift off into a deep sleep.

The Girl Who Controls Fire & Water

+-+-+

500 years passed since that fateful day in ancient Splendoria. Now, a young girl was riding along a path. Around her neck was a black string. Hanging from the string were two stones shaped like teardrops – one orange and one blue. The girl was a pretty teenager, with long, raven hair and amber eyes. She was dressed in a white gown and slippers, and orange, fingerless gloves. She was riding on a magnificent, white unicorn. The girl was June Xian Tao, and her steed was known as ‘Dragoness.’
As they travelled along beside a mountain, June saw something and brought her unicorn to a stop. It was a monkey, trapped beneath the stone. June jumped down from the saddle and bent down beside the poor creature. Before she could do anything, an arrow shot out of nowhere and managed to stick in the stone. Attached to it were a note and a small, gold ring. June removed the note and read it.

To whom it may concern,
We are aware of your activities, and this monkey may be of great help to you. He has many powers. By placing this golden band on him, he will become bonded to your will. He has performed many sins in the past, and this will be his way to redemption. If he becomes out of hand, you can keep him in line by saying ‘bad monkey.’

Many regards,

The Pantheon of Splendoria and Beyond

June read it over again and again, and allowed her brain to process the information. Eventually, she began to understand, and realised this was the same monkey who had been the focus of many stories she had heard during her childhood. He had been a great sage who took the path of violence and lost his way. She removed the gold ring from the arrow and it immediately grew bigger, so it looked more like a headband. She lifted up the monkey’s head and slid the band on. Now it was just a case of getting him free.
June noticed a crack in the mountain, and a devilish smile grew on her face. She concentrated and held out her hands, palms open. The blue stone around her neck glowed and in a spectacular display, water spiralled out of her flesh and into the crack. The water froze, and expanded the holes. A great hole exploded in the side of the mountain, freeing the trapped primate. She pulled the monkey out from beneath the mountain and began to pat his cheeks.
“Hey,†she said, “wake up.â€

Kai Candle groaned and slowly opened his eyes. He saw a mysterious girl hovering over him, and he sat up straight. He felt a strange coldness around his head and reached up. He felt something and gasped.
“What is this?!†he cried.
“That is a headband sent by the gods,†said June. “If you want it off, you have to come with me.â€
“Who are you!?†Kai demanded, pointing his staff at the girl’s neck. June frowned. “Bad monkey,†she said. Kai fell on his rear end, his hands and feet pinned to the ground. Kai struggled, but he couldn’t get up.
“That’s a dodgy trick,†the monkey growled.
“My name is June Xian Tao,†the girl said, “and like I said, you get your freedom when you earn it. It’s been decided. Let’s go.â€

With no other choice, Kai had to follow.

“So what exactly are we doing?†he asked.
“We’re looking for magatama,†June replied.
“Magatama?â€
“Stones that control the elements, and give the user special powers. Our mission is to collect them, and stop dark forces from using them to their own ends.â€
“We have to collect all of these things?â€
“No, there’s too many. We just need enough to stop the enemies of peace before they can grow too powerful.â€
“So will it involve fighting?â€
“Probably.â€
“I feel better already!â€

The twosome were travelling along a basal. They had been on the road for a few days now, and had not come across any cities. They had gone straight into the countryside.
“So how do you know when a magatama’s close by?†Kai asked.
“Dragoness’ horn glows,†June replied. “Unicorns have a sixth sense that allows them to detect magatama when they’re nearby.â€
“That’s handy,†Kai muttered.

The water exploded upwards as a huge figure, clad in white-and-blue armour appeared. The face, barely visible in the smooth helmet, was green and hardened, with beady, blue eyes. June’s eyes widened and Dragoness stepped back.
“What is that thing?†Kai asked.
“A Tuscan Prosecutor!†June gasped. The Tuscan Prosecutor laughed, a deep booming noise, as it held up a black trident. Electrical energy travelled along it.
“Get back!†Kai cried. “I’ll handle it!â€
“On your own?!†June exclaimed.
“Trust me, kid,†Kai smirked.
“Puny monkey,†the Tuscan Prosecutor sneered. “You stand no chance!†He fired a blast from the trident. Kai hopped out of the way and swung his staff, hitting his huge enemy in the back of the legs. The Tuscan Prosecutor grunted in surprise but managed to keep his balance. Kai jumped into the air and placed two fingers between his lips. He whistled and a cloud formed under his feet. Once in the air, he swung his staff around in the air and then sliced it downwards. The Tuscan Prosecutor looked down and panic spread across its face. Ice was creeping up from the water and covering all but its face.
Kai jumped off the cloud and kicked the armour, shattering it. The Prosecutor’s true form, a grisly, green fish, fell into the water and swam away, yelping like a coward.

“Problem solved,†the monkey king ckled, resting his staff over his shoulder. “Now, on we go.â€
“Looks like you have some uses after all,†June said quietly.
“You don’t even know the half of it,†Kai replied nonchalantly.

Dragoness trotted along a dusty road, ridden by June, and led by Kai. As they walked quietly, June looked at Kai and asked, “Why do you still wear that gown?â€
“I guess I kinda forgot I was wearing it!†Kai laughed. “It’s too heavy for travelling.†He undid the clasp and the let the gown fall, leaving just the clothes underneath. He stretched out his furry arms. “Mmm…much better.â€
Dragoness neighed as her horn began to glow. The two others looked at it.
“The horn’s glowing…†Kai muttered.
“That means there are magatama nearby,†said June. “Take us there, Dragoness.â€
The unicorn began to walk forward, drawn almost magnetically by the magic. After a few short moments, they came to the edge of a village.
“The magatama must be in there,†June murmured.
“Then let’s go!†Kai laughed and marched into the village. People began to poke their heads out of their houses curiously, or fearfully. Slowly, they began to come out into the open. June rode up beside Kai. A little girl noticed the stone monkey’s tail swishing from left to right, and grabbed it in both hands, giving it a squeeze. Kai froze up and fell on his front. June frowned as the villagers gasped.
“What happened to him?†someone asked.
“Get him inside and boil some water,†said June flatly. “Squeezing his tail freezes his body.â€

Soon, the travellers were taken to the home of the village leader and his family. Dragoness was grazing in the field. She knew not to stray too far from her rider. The village leader’s eldest daughter brought a kettle of hot water. June took the kettle and gingerly poured it lightly over Kai. The monkey king’s systems thawed and he sat up on the bed. He rubbed the side of his head.
“Dang, I should really find a way to keep my tail hidden,†he groaned.
“Nevermind that,†said June, “we have to get back to our search.†The village leader and his family sighed together.
“We were hoping you would defeat the monster for us,†said his wife.
“What monster?†Kai asked.
“There’s been a terrible monster terrorizing our village,†explained the village leader. “He eats our crops, animals and even our children, unless we give him regular sacrifices. Now he’s demanding a bride and…â€
He looked over at his eldest daughter, a teenager of 19.
“…He’s chosen my poor, sweet Sabina,†he finished. June bit her bottom lip.
“The fiend,†Kai growled. “Fear not, citizens! For I, Kai Candle, the Great Sage, Equal of Heaven, will defeat this creature, and free you of his tyranny!â€
“We need a plan,†said June. She smiled darkly. “I have it. Kai, you will disguise yourself as Sabina, and allow this monster to take you to his lair. Once there, you will face him and defeat him.â€
“WHAT?!†Kai exclaimed. “Why can’t you be the bait?!â€
“Because Sabina is shorter and skinnier than me,†June replied, “plus her hair is blonde and her eyes are green. You can change your shape to look like her perfectly.†Kai sighed. “…Fine…â€

So the plan was put into motion. In the morning, Kai sat cross-legged on a rock, now wearing bridal-style clothes and in Sabina’s form. The veil was fixed to hide his headband. June and the village leader watched from a crack in the door of the house. Soon, the ground began to tremble as giant footsteps came closer and closer. Kai sang quietly to himself.

“What’s that coming over the hill
Is it a monster? Is it a monster?
What’s coming over the hill
Is it a monster? Is it a monster?â€

When he saw the beast coming right for him, he murmured, “Bloody hell, it is.â€
The monster resembled, to an extent, a giant, dark purple frog with wide, amber eyes and suckers on the ends of it’s long fingers. Kai grinned nervously.
“There’s my new bride!†the monster bellowed. Before the disguised monkey could even say a word, he was scooped up in the giant hand and carried off. The village leader looked at June.
“Will your friend be all right?†he asked.
“Don’t worry,†June smirked, “if 500 years under a mountain didn’t finish him off, I’m positive this monster doesn’t stand a chance.â€
“Well…if you say so,†the village leader murmured.

The frog monster was leaping across the landscape, back towards it’s lair in a far-off swamp. Kai squirmed in it’s grasp – the giant clammy hand was so disgusting! Eventually, they reached the vast swamp, and the frog hopped into a cave at one end. He placed ‘Sabina’ down on a large boulder.
“You stay here,†it said, “and I shall return shortly.â€
“That’s what you think,†the fake bride sneered.
“What’s that supposed to mean?†the monster growled.
“Because I’m not Sabina!†Kai performed a hand gesture and returned to his regular form. “Ta-da! I’m King Kai Candle, the Great Sage Monkey!â€
“You…†the monster snarled, clenching its fists. “I’ll kill you for making a monkey out of me!â€
“Bad joke, dude!†Kai retorted. He narrowly dodged a devastating punch and reached behind his ear, retrieving his magic wishing staff, which automatically grew to the right size. He swung it around and whacked the beast on the side. The monster stumbled but grabbed the side of the cave to regain it’s balance. Kai planted his feet into the opposite wall and bounded off. He somersaulted above the monster and whacked it several times on the head. The monster stumbled and fell over on its stomach. Kai landed nimbly and rested his staff over his shoulders.
Before he could gloat however, the beast’s skin began to ripple. Realising this was not the best place to be, Kai started to run for it. The monster released a thick, grey mist from every pore on it’s body, and with a mighty uproar, it exploded. Kai screamed as he was thrown into the wall of the cave. When it had faded, the stone monkey pulled himself out of the wall. There was no sign of the monster at all, but the mist remained. Lying in the middle of the cave was a light brown stone shaped like a teardrop…a magatama!
Kai coughed up some dust and walked towards the magatama. He lifted it up and stared at the tiny hole in the wider half. “Not a bad outcome, really.â€

Kai returned to the village victoriously, but he and June didn’t str celebrations. By evening, they were back on the road. Kai was wearing a black string around his neck, with his new magatama hanging off it.
“What makes you think I’ll let you keep it?†June asked. “I’m your master.â€
“Because I found it fair-and-square,†Kai shot back.
“Fair enough, we’ll agree to keep all magatama that we find personally.â€
“Fine with me.â€
