TRIVIA: The 1957 Toho tokusatsu eiga The Mysterians was the first tokusatsu ever to include toys among its tie-in merchandise (before then, movies like Godzilla, Godzilla Raids Again, and the banned Half-Human have had books and illustrated manga storybooks for children). The item in question was the hand-held Mysterian Ray Gun, which was made of tin and plastic, and shot sparks. The Mysterian Ray Gun, manufactured by Yonezawa Toys, would be the tokusatsu collector's Holy Grail!

Godzilla himself did not have toys in merchandising until 1964, when an American company, Aurora, made the famous Godzilla model kit, which has been reissued several times, even as far back as 2004! (The 2004 reissue is easy to find.) His appearance was impressively based on the Kin-Goji (from 1962's King Kong Vs. Godzilla). In 1964, the Japanese toy company Marusan translated the Aurora model kit into a "plamodel" (or "puramoderu," short for plastic model) figure, and finally, in 1966, the Plamodel Godzilla was translated into the very first "sofubi" (soft vinyl) Godzilla, as we know it!
